Jordan Reed (born July 3, 1990) is a former professional football player. He played as a tight end in the National Football League (NFL). Jordan played college football for the Florida Gators. The Washington Redskins drafted him in 2013. He was known as one of the best tight ends in the league. However, many injuries led to his retirement. He played his last season for the San Francisco 49ers in 2020. He retired due to health issues related to concussions.

Early Life and High School Football
Jordan Reed was born in New Britain, Connecticut. He went to New London High School. As a junior, he was a talented quarterback. He threw for 1,706 yards and 38 touchdowns. He also ran for 370 yards and eight touchdowns.
In 2007, he led his high school team to a perfect season. He was a top recruit, considered one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks. Many colleges wanted him to play for them. He chose to play for the Florida Gators.
College Football Career
Jordan Reed received a scholarship to the University of Florida. He played for the Florida Gators football teams from 2009 to 2012. He started as a quarterback but did not play in his first year. In 2009, he was "redshirted," meaning he practiced but did not play in games.
After his first year, he changed his position to tight end. This is a player who can block and catch passes. He finished his college career with 78 catches. He gained 938 yards and scored six touchdowns. After the 2012 season, he decided to enter the NFL Draft. He gave up his final year of college eligibility.
Playing in the NFL
Jordan Reed was chosen by the Washington Redskins in the 2013 NFL Draft. He was the 85th player picked overall. On May 24, 2013, he signed a four-year contract with the team.
First Seasons with Washington (2013-2014)
In his first NFL game on September 15, 2013, Jordan scored his first touchdown. This made him the first Redskins rookie tight end to score in his first two games since 2004. On October 20, 2013, he had a great game against the Chicago Bears. He caught nine passes for 134 yards and a touchdown. This set a new team record for a rookie tight end.
Later in 2013, he suffered a concussion and missed several games. He was placed on injured reserve. Even though he only played nine games, he was named to the Pro Football Writers of America all-rookie team.
In 2014, Jordan dealt with hamstring injuries. He missed several games throughout the season. Despite the injuries, he had a game with nine catches for 123 yards against the Indianapolis Colts.
Breakout Seasons (2015-2016)
The 2015 season was a big year for Jordan Reed. He caught his first touchdown of the season on September 13. On October 25, he had a career-high 11 catches and two touchdowns against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He continued to score touchdowns and gain many yards.
On December 26, 2015, he helped the Redskins win the NFC East division. He had nine catches for 129 yards and two touchdowns. In his first playoff game, he caught nine passes for 120 yards and a touchdown. He was ranked 77th among the top 100 NFL players in 2016.

On May 5, 2016, Jordan signed a new five-year contract with the Redskins. He continued his strong play, scoring two touchdowns against the Cleveland Browns. He became the fastest tight end in NFL history to reach 200 career catches.
He suffered another concussion in October 2016, missing two games. On November 24, he had a season-high ten catches for 95 yards and two touchdowns against the Dallas Cowboys. He was chosen for the 2017 Pro Bowl, which is a special game for the best players. He was ranked 65th among the top 100 NFL players in 2017.
Later Seasons and Retirement (2017-2021)
In 2017, Jordan missed most of the season due to a hamstring injury. He played only six games. In 2018, he had 54 catches for 558 yards and two touchdowns. However, he suffered a toe injury and was placed on injured reserve in December.
The 2019 season was very tough for Jordan. He suffered his seventh career concussion during a preseason game. He missed the entire regular season. In February 2020, he was still recovering from the concussion. The Redskins released him shortly after.
On August 9, 2020, Jordan signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers. In his second game with the 49ers, he caught seven passes for 50 yards and two touchdowns. He was later placed on injured reserve with a sprained knee ligament but returned to play.
On April 20, 2021, Jordan Reed announced his retirement from football. He decided to retire due to ongoing health issues from the many concussions he had during his career.

Jordan Reed is the younger brother of David Reed. David was also a professional football player. He was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2010.
