Club Career Highlights
Starting Out in Portugal
Jorge Andrade was born in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. He began his professional football journey with his hometown club, C.F. Estrela da Amadora, in 1997. He quickly became a noticeable player.
After his time at Estrela da Amadora, he moved to Porto, one of Portugal's biggest clubs. He was a very active player for Porto, especially in the 2001–02 UEFA Champions League season. He played in 15 out of 16 possible matches as Porto advanced far in the competition.
Playing in Spain with Deportivo
After the 2002 World Cup, Jorge Andrade joined Deportivo de La Coruña in Spain. This was a big move for him. In his first season, he played in 11 La Liga games. In the following years, he became a regular starter for the team when he was fit to play.
In April 2004, during a Champions League semi-final match against his old team Porto, Andrade was sent off (given a red card). He had made a friendly gesture towards an opponent, but the referee misunderstood it. This meant he had to miss the next match.
Time at Juventus
In the summer of 2007, Andrade signed with Juventus, a famous club in Italy. However, his time at Juventus was unfortunately marked by serious injuries. In September, he broke his left kneecap and missed the rest of the season.
The next year, he suffered the same injury again, which meant he missed the entire 2008–09 season. These repeated knee problems made it very difficult for him to play professionally. In April 2009, Juventus and Andrade agreed to end his contract. After this, he tried to find another team but was unable to return to playing at the highest level.
International Career for Portugal
Jorge Andrade made his first appearance for the Portuguese national team on April 25, 2001. He played the full match in a friendly game against France.
He was part of Portugal's teams for the 2002 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2004. At Euro 2004, which was held in Portugal, he played alongside Ricardo Carvalho and helped his country reach the final. He scored three goals in his 51 international games. One of his goals was in a 5–1 win against Angola in November 2001. During Euro 2004, he also accidentally scored an own goal in a 2–1 semi-final victory against the Netherlands.
Andrade was unable to play in the 2006 FIFA World Cup because he had knee surgery earlier that year. His last international game was in August 2007, during a Euro 2008 qualifying match against Armenia.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Jorge Andrade began a coaching career. In April 2015, he became an assistant coach for Atlético Clube de Portugal, a club in his hometown. He later took on a temporary manager role for one match in February 2016.
In March 2016, Andrade became the main manager for Oriental, another team from the capital city. The season ended with the team being relegated to a lower league.
In February 2019, he joined Vitória de Setúbal as an assistant coach. He left this role in August for family reasons. In December 2021, Andrade returned to his first club, Estrela, to work within their football structure.
Personal Life
Jorge Andrade has family roots in the Cape Verde islands, which were once a Portuguese colony. Other famous Portuguese footballers like Miguel, Nani, and Nélson also have Cape Verdean descent. In 2006, Andrade visited Cape Verde and helped with youth football programs there.
