Club Career
Starting Out in Portugal
Jorge Andrade was born in Lisbon, Portugal. He began his professional football journey with his hometown club, Estrela da Amadora, in 1997. He played well there for three years.
After that, he moved to Porto, one of Portugal's biggest clubs. He quickly became a key player for them. In the 2001–02 UEFA Champions League season, he played in 15 out of 16 matches, helping Porto reach the second group stage.
Moving to Spain with Deportivo
In 2002, after the World Cup, Andrade joined Deportivo de La Coruña in Spain. This move cost the Spanish club about €12 million. In his first season, he played 11 games. In the years that followed, he became a very important player for Deportivo when he was healthy.
In a Champions League semi-final match against his old team Porto, Andrade was sent off. He had made a friendly gesture towards an opponent, Deco, but the referee misunderstood it and gave him a red card. He had to miss the next game because of this.
Challenges at Juventus
In the summer of 2007, Andrade signed with Juventus in Italy for about €10 million. However, his time there was difficult because of injuries. In September, during a game against Roma, he broke his left kneecap. This injury made him miss the rest of the season.
Sadly, he suffered the same injury again in 2008 during pre-season training. This meant he missed the entire 2008–09 season too. Juventus even wrote off his value because they thought he might not be able to play professionally again. This was his third knee surgery in a year and his fourth on his left knee overall.
In April 2009, Juventus and Andrade agreed to end his contract. This made him a free agent, meaning he could look for another team. He tried out for a few clubs, like Málaga and Toronto FC, but he didn't sign with any of them.
International Career
Jorge Andrade played his first game for the Portuguese national team on 25 April 2001. He played the whole game in a friendly match against France.
He was part of the Portuguese squads for the 2002 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2004. In Euro 2004, which was held in Portugal, he helped his team reach the final, where they finished as runners-up. He scored three goals in 51 games for Portugal. One of his goals was an own goal in the Euro 2004 semi-final against the Netherlands, but Portugal still won that game 2–1.
Andrade missed the 2006 FIFA World Cup because he had knee surgery in March of that year. His last international game was in August 2007, a 1–1 draw against Armenia.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Jorge Andrade started a coaching career. In April 2015, he became an assistant coach for Atlético Clube de Portugal, a club in his hometown. He even served as an interim (temporary) manager for one match in February 2016.
In March 2016, he took his first main coaching job at Oriental, another team from Lisbon. However, the team faced challenges, including some players being investigated for bribery, and they were relegated that season.
In February 2019, Andrade became an assistant coach for Vitória de Setúbal. He left this role in August for family reasons. In December 2021, he returned to his first club, Estrela, to work in their football structure.
Personal Life
Jorge Andrade has family roots in the Cape Verde islands, which used to be a Portuguese colony. Other famous Portuguese footballers like Miguel, Nani, and Nélson also have Cape Verdean descent. In 2006, Andrade visited Cape Verde and helped with youth football programs there.
