Jorge Garbajosa Chaparro (born on December 19, 1977) is a Spanish former professional basketball player. He is currently the President of FIBA Europe. He also used to be the president of the Spanish Basketball Federation.
Jorge was a tall player, standing at 2.07 meters (6 feet 9 inches). He played as a power forward and small forward. He was chosen for the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2007. He also earned spots on the All-EuroLeague First Team in 2003 and Second Team in 2006.
He played for the senior Spain national team. With Spain, he won a gold medal at the 2006 World Cup. He also won several medals at the EuroBasket championships. These included a bronze medal in 2001, two silver medals in 2003 and 2007, and a gold medal in 2009.

Jorge's Basketball Journey
Playing in Europe
Jorge Garbajosa started his professional basketball career in Spain. He played for Taugrés (later called TAU Cerámica) from 1995 to 2000. In 1999, he helped Baskonia win the Spanish King's Cup.
After that, Jorge moved to Italy. He played for Benetton Treviso for four seasons, from 2000 to 2004. With Benetton, he won two Italian National Cups, two Italian Super Cups, and two Italian League championships. During the 2002–03 EuroLeague season, he was named to the All-EuroLeague First Team. He also led the EuroLeague in steals that year.
Garbajosa then returned to Spain. He played for Unicaja for two seasons (2004–2006). He helped Unicaja win the Spanish League championship and the Spanish Cup. He was named the MVP (Most Valuable Player) of the Spanish Cup in 2005. He also earned the MVP award for the Spanish League Finals in 2006.
Playing in the NBA

On July 24, 2006, Jorge Garbajosa signed a three-year contract with the Toronto Raptors in the NBA. He wore jersey number 15. He quickly became a regular starter for the Raptors. In December 2006, he was named the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month.
However, on March 26, 2007, Jorge suffered a serious injury to his left leg during a game. He had surgery to fix a broken bone, a displaced ankle, and damaged ligaments. This injury meant he missed the rest of that season. Despite the injury, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team along with his teammate Andrea Bargnani.
Jorge tried to return for the 2007–08 season, but he needed more surgery on his leg and ankle. This injury greatly affected his NBA career. The Raptors bought out his contract in June 2008. While playing for the Raptors, his nickname was "The Garbage Man."
Returning to Europe
After his time in the NBA, Garbajosa returned to Europe. In 2008, he signed with the Russian club Khimki Moscow Region. The next year, he moved back to Spain to play for Real Madrid. He played there until 2011.
In March 2011, he signed with Unicaja again. In May 2012, Jorge Garbajosa decided to end his playing career.
National Team Achievements
Jorge Garbajosa was a very important player for the Spanish national team. He played in two Summer Olympics: in 2000 and 2004.
He won several medals at the EuroBasket championships:
- A bronze medal in 2001.
- Two silver medals in 2003 and 2007.
- A gold medal in 2009.
On September 3, 2006, his team won the gold medal at the 2006 FIBA World Championship. In the final game against Greece, he scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. He was also named to the All-Tournament team for his excellent play.
In 2007, Jorge Garbajosa was named "Mister Europa 2006" by an Italian magazine. This award recognizes the best European basketball player.
Life After Playing Basketball
After retiring from playing, Jorge Garbajosa continued to be involved in basketball. On July 9, 2016, he became the President of the Spanish Basketball Federation. He was reelected to this position in 2020.
On May 20, 2023, Jorge Garbajosa was elected as the new President of FIBA Europe. FIBA Europe is the governing body for basketball in Europe. He took on this role right away. As president of FIBA Europe, he is also a member of the FIBA Central Board.
