What Does the Name Torrejón de Ardoz Mean?
The name Torrejón comes from the Spanish word torre, which means "tower." The ending -jón means something is small or not very important. So, it might mean "small tower."
The second part of the name, Ardoz, comes from a small stream (or creek) that flows nearby.
A Look at Torrejón de Ardoz's History
The exact beginning of Torrejón de Ardoz is not fully known. However, it likely started around the 12th century. At that time, towers and forts were built to protect the nearby city of Alcalá de Henares.
For a long time, Torrejón de Ardoz was part of the land controlled by Alcalá. In 1554, it became its own town. This meant it had more control over its own affairs.
In 1843, a small battle happened here. General Ramón Narvaez fought against Senator Antonio Seoane. This was part of a bigger rebellion at the time.
The Torrejón Air Base
The United States Air Force started using the Torrejón Air Base in 1955. This was agreed upon with the Spanish government. Over the years, some people did not like the base being there. There were peaceful protests by groups who wanted the base to close.
Later, Felipe González, who became Spain's prime minister, promised to close the base to American fighter planes. In the early 1990s, the American F-16 fighter jets left the base.
