Playing Career

Starting at Real Madrid

Guti was born in Torrejón de Ardoz, Spain. He started playing for Real Madrid's youth academy in 1986. He began as a striker but later moved to midfield. He stayed with Real Madrid for almost his whole career.

On December 2, 1995, Guti played his first game for the main team. Real Madrid won 4–1 against Sevilla FC. In his first season, he scored one goal in nine games.

Winning Trophies

In 1997, Guti helped Real Madrid win two trophies: La Liga and the Supercopa de España. He played 17 games that season. In the 1997–98 season, he helped the team win the UEFA Champions League and the Intercontinental Cup. Guti also won the UEFA European Under-21 Championship with Spain's youth team.

The 1999–2000 season was a bit tough for Guti at first. He scored six goals in 28 games and helped Real Madrid win another Champions League title. The next year, he had his best scoring season, netting 14 goals. He played mostly as a striker because of injuries to other players. This helped the team win their 27th league title and another Supercup.

Between 2001 and 2003, Guti scored eight goals in 63 games. He helped Real Madrid win the UEFA Champions League again in 2002. After Real Madrid bought Ronaldo in 2002, Guti moved back to midfield. His goal-scoring slowed down after that.

In the 2004–05 season, Guti did not score any goals for Real Madrid. This was the first time in seven years. He only scored one goal in an international game for Spain. In the 2005–06 season, he played 43 games and scored six goals.

In the 2006–07 season, Guti became the main creative playmaker for Real Madrid. He was very good at making short and through passes. His excellent play helped Real Madrid win the league title for the 30th time. One memorable game was against Sevilla in 2007. He came off the bench and helped set up many goals.

On February 10, 2008, Guti scored two goals and made four assists in a game against Real Valladolid. Real Madrid won 7–0. He was named Player of the match. That season, Real Madrid won another league title. On September 14, Guti scored Real Madrid's 5,000th league goal.

In the 2009–10 season, Guti still played a lot, even with new players like Kaká joining. He scored twice in the league.

Moving to Beşiktaş

On July 25, 2010, Guti left Real Madrid after almost 25 years. He signed a two-year contract with Beşiktaş in Turkey. In his first game for Beşiktaş, he helped set up the only goal.

On November 28, 2010, Guti scored one goal and assisted another in Beşiktaş's win against Galatasaray SK. This was Beşiktaş's first win at that stadium in six years. On May 11, 2011, he helped Beşiktaş win the Turkish Cup. This was his first domestic cup trophy.

Guti left Beşiktaş on November 15, 2011, when he was 35 years old.

International Career

Guti played for the Spanish national team from May 5, 1999. He played 13 games for his country over about six years. However, he never played in a major tournament like the World Cup or European Championship for the senior team.

Before that, he won the UEFA European Under-18 Championship in 1995. He also won the Under-21 European Championship in 1998.

Coaching Career

Guti announced he was retiring from playing football on September 21, 2012. He said he wanted to become a coach and train young players. He started working as a manager for Real Madrid's youth teams in 2013.

Playing Style

Guti started his career as a striker. But he later became a very skilled playmaker. He was known for his great vision, technique, creativity, and passing. He was also good at making assists for his teammates. He could also score goals by running into the penalty box.

Guti was a versatile player, meaning he could play in different positions. He usually played as an attacking midfielder behind the forwards. This was his favorite position. But he could also play as a second striker, a winger, or even in a defensive midfield role.

Even though he was very talented, Guti sometimes had injuries. He also had a strong personality, which sometimes caused difficulties with his coaches.

Personal Life

Guti married Arancha de Benito, a Spanish TV celebrity, in 1999. They had two children, Zayra and Aitor. They later separated but remained good friends. In 2016, he married Romina Belluscio, an Argentine TV presenter. They had a son named Enzo in 2013.
