José María Gutiérrez Hernández (born October 31, 1976), known as Guti, is a Spanish former professional footballer. He played as an attacking midfielder, which is a player who helps both defend and attack.

Guti spent almost his entire career playing for Real Madrid. He played in 542 official games for the club. He was also the vice-captain (second in command). He helped Real Madrid win 15 trophies. These included three Champions League titles and five La Liga championships. He also played for Beşiktaş in Turkey.

Guti played 13 times for the Spanish national team. His first game for Spain was in 1999. After he stopped playing, Guti became a manager (coach).

Club Career Highlights

Playing for Real Madrid

Guti was born in Torrejón de Ardoz, Spain. He joined Real Madrid's youth academy, called the cantera, in 1986. He started as a striker (a player who scores goals). Later, he moved to midfield, where he played for most of his career.

On December 2, 1995, Guti played his first game for the main Real Madrid team. They won 4–1 against Sevilla FC. In his first season, he scored one goal in nine games.

Winning Trophies with Real Madrid

Guti helped Real Madrid win many trophies. In 1997, they won La Liga (the Spanish league) and the Supercopa de España (Spanish Super Cup). He played 17 games that season.

In the 1997–98 season, Guti helped Real Madrid win the UEFA Champions League. This is a big European club competition. They also won the Intercontinental Cup. Guti also won the UEFA European Under-21 Championship with Spain's youth team.

In the 1999–2000 season, Guti sometimes struggled. He was sent off (given a red card) eight times in league games during his career. But he still helped Real Madrid win another UEFA Champions League title. He scored six goals in 28 games that season.

The next year, 2000–01, was one of his best for scoring. He scored 14 goals. He played as a striker because other players were injured. He helped the team win their 27th league title and another Spanish Super Cup.

Between 2001 and 2003, Guti scored eight goals in 63 games. He helped Real Madrid win the 2001–02 UEFA Champions League again. After Ronaldo joined the team in 2002, Guti moved back to midfield. His goal scoring slowed down after that.

In the 2004–05 season, Guti did not score any goals for Real Madrid. This was the first time in seven years. In 2005–06, he played 43 games and scored six goals.

Guti became a key playmaker (a player who creates scoring chances) for Real Madrid in the 2006–07 season. He was known for his excellent short and long passes. His passes helped Real Madrid score many goals. They won the league title for the 30th time.

On February 10, 2008, Guti had an amazing game against Real Valladolid. He scored two goals and helped with four others. Real Madrid won 7–0. He was named the best player of the match. They won another league title that season. On September 14, he scored Real Madrid's 5,000th league goal in a 4–3 win.

In the 2009–10 season, Guti played less often due to injuries and disagreements with the coach. However, he still managed to play regularly towards the end of the season.

Time with Beşiktaş

On July 25, 2010, Guti left Real Madrid after almost 25 years. He signed a two-year contract with Beşiktaş JK in Turkey. In his first game, he helped set up the only goal.

On November 28, 2010, Guti helped Beşiktaş win against Galatasaray SK. He scored one goal and assisted another. This was Beşiktaş's first win at that stadium in six years. On May 11, 2011, he helped Beşiktaş win the Turkish Cup. This was his first domestic cup win in his professional career.

Guti left Beşiktaş on November 15, 2011, when he was 35 years old.

International Career

Guti played for the Spanish national team from May 5, 1999. He played 13 games for his country over about six years. However, he never played in a major tournament like the World Cup or European Championship for the senior team.

Before that, he had success with Spain's youth teams. He won the UEFA European Under-18 Championship in 1995. Then, he won the Under-21 European Championship in 1998.

Coaching Career

Guti announced he was retiring from playing football on September 21, 2012. He said he wanted to become a coach or a sporting director. He especially wanted to coach the Real Madrid youth team.

In 2013, Guti started working as a coach for Real Madrid's youth teams. He coached them for several years.

On July 4, 2018, Guti became an assistant coach at his former club, Beşiktaş. On November 5, 2019, he became the head coach of UD Almería, a Spanish team. He was later sacked on June 26, 2020.

Style of Play

Guti started as a striker. But he became a very talented playmaker. He was known for his great vision, skill, creativity, and passing. He could also score goals by running into the box. He was a versatile player, meaning he could play in different positions. He usually played as an attacking midfielder, but could also play as a second striker, a winger, or a deep-lying playmaker (a midfielder who starts attacks from deeper on the field).

Even though he was very talented, Guti sometimes had injuries. He also had a strong personality, which sometimes caused problems with his coaches. Some people also said he was not always consistent in his play.

Personal Life

Guti married Arancha de Benito, a Spanish TV personality, in 1999. They had two children, Zayra (born 2000) and Aitor (born 2002). They divorced after almost ten years but remained friends. In 2016, he married Argentine TV presenter Romina Belluscio. They had a son named Enzo in 2013.

Guti's cousin, Javi Hernández, also played youth football for Real Madrid.

Other Activities

Guti appeared as himself in two movies: Torrente 3: El Protector and Goal II: Living the Dream. He was also in a 2005 documentary about Real Madrid called Real, The Movie. In 2013, he was a judge on the Spanish TV show Celebrity Splash!.
