Kids Encyclopedia Facts

José Longinos Martínez (born in Calahorra, La Rioja, Spain, on March 15, 1756 – died in Campeche, Mexico, on November 6, 1802) was an important Spanish naturalist. He explored areas like Baja California Sur, Baja California, and California in 1792. His detailed notes from these travels gave us valuable information about the animals, plants, minerals, and native people of the region.

His Life and Travels

José Longinos Martínez was born in La Rioja, Spain. He came to New Spain (which is now Mexico) as part of a special trip to study plants. However, he had some disagreements with the leaders of this trip. So, he decided to explore on his own.

He traveled a long way, from Cabo San Lucas at the southern tip of Baja California all the way up to Monterey in what is now California. This journey happened between January and September of 1792.

Even though he traveled very quickly, his notes were very important. Sometimes his descriptions were not perfect, or he wrote down things he heard from others. But his records still saved a lot of information that would have been lost. This was especially true for details about the daily lives of the native people he met.

Later, in 1795, Longinos traveled to Guatemala. He also helped to open museums of natural history. These museums were in Mexico City and in Guatemala. They helped people learn more about the natural world.
