Joseba Andoni Leizaola Azpiazu (born 3 January 1931 – died 6 January 2017) was an important Spanish politician. He was a member of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV-EAJ). This party works for the rights and culture of the Basque Country in Spain.
Leizaola served in the Basque Parliament for 18 years, from 1980 to 1998. He was also the third President of the Basque Parliament from 1990 to 1998.

Early Life and Family History
Joseba Leizaola was born in San Sebastián, a city in the Gipuzkoa province of Spain. His family had a strong connection to Basque culture and politics.
Moving to Venezuela
In the early 1940s, Joseba and his family moved to Venezuela. They left Spain to escape the government of Francisco Franco. This government was a dictatorship that ruled Spain for many years.
Family's Political Connections
Joseba's father, Ricardo Leizaola, started a newspaper called El Día. His uncle, Jesús María Leizaola, was also a very important figure. He was the Lehendakari, which means President, of the Basque government-in-exile. This government worked from outside Spain during Franco's rule.
Joseba and his family lived in Venezuela until Spain became a democracy again. During this time, Joseba was active in the Basque community there. He led the PNV group in Caracas. He was also a member of the Basque Center of Caracas.
Political Career in the Basque Country
After Spain became a democracy, Joseba Leizaola returned to his home country. He quickly became a leader in the PNV.
Leading the PNV
Leizaola became the head of the PNV's local group in Gipuzkoa. This happened during the time when Spain was changing to a democracy. He also served on important party committees from 1968 to 1977.
Serving in the Basque Parliament
In 1980, Joseba Leizaola was elected to the new Basque Parliament. This was a big step for the Basque Country as it gained more self-rule. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for 18 years.
From 1990 to 1998, he held the important role of President of the Basque Parliament. He was the third person to hold this position. After his term, Juan María Atutxa took over as President.
Later Life and Legacy
Joseba Leizaola passed away on 6 January 2017, at the age of 86. He had been ill for a long time. He is remembered for his dedication to the Basque Country and its people.
