About Joseph-Alfred Mousseau
Joseph-Alfred Mousseau was born in Sainte-Geneviève-de-Berthier. This place was in Lower Canada, a part of British North America before Canada became a country. His parents were Louis Mousseau and Sophie Duteau.
His Start in Politics
Mousseau first became a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is a person elected to represent a specific area in the Canadian Parliament. He was part of the Conservative Party. He was first elected in 1874 for the area called Bagot. He was re-elected three more times, showing people trusted him.
In 1880, he joined the Cabinet of Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald. The Cabinet is a group of top advisors to the Prime Minister. Mousseau first served as the President of the Queen's Privy Council of Canada. After that, he became the Secretary of State for Canada. These were very important jobs in the federal government.
Becoming Premier of Quebec
Mousseau then switched from federal politics to provincial politics. He traded places with Joseph-Adolphe Chapleau, another important politician. On July 31, 1882, Mousseau became the sixth Premier of the province of Quebec. The Premier is the head of the provincial government.
He served as Premier until January 22, 1884. He resigned from this role because he was appointed as a judge. He became a judge for the Superior Court in the Rimouski area. Joseph-Alfred Mousseau passed away in Montreal in 1886.
