Joseph Albert Campbell (born May 15, 1817 – died March 27, 1900) was an American businessman. He is famous for starting the Campbell Soup Company in 1869. He began this company with a partner named Abraham Anderson.

Joseph Campbell's Early Life
Joseph Campbell was born on May 15, 1817. His hometown was Bridgeton, New Jersey. His father, James Campbell, was a blacksmith. His mother was Hannah Ogden Campbell. Joseph's parents were Presbyterian and grew fruit on a farm. He had seven brothers and sisters.
Starting Campbell's Soup
In 1869, Joseph Campbell started his company. It would later become the well-known Campbell's Soup company. He worked hard to build his business.
In 1894, Joseph Campbell decided to retire. Arthur Dorrance then took over as the company president. A year later, in 1895, the company made its first can of ready-to-eat tomato soup. This was a big step!
How Condensed Soup Was Invented
The company changed its name to Joseph Campbell & Co. in 1896. In 1897, a chemist named John T. Dorrance joined the company. He was Arthur Dorrance's nephew. John Dorrance had studied at top universities.
He came up with a brilliant idea: how to make soup "condensed." This meant taking out half of the water, which is the heaviest part of soup. This made the soup much cheaper to ship. John Dorrance later became the company president. He led the company from 1914 to 1930. Eventually, he bought the company from the Campbell family.
The Famous Red-and-White Can
The classic red-and-white can design is very famous. Many Campbell's products still use it today. It has become an American cultural icon. The artist Andy Warhol even used the cans in his famous pop art prints.
Joseph Campbell's Death
Joseph Campbell passed away on March 27, 1900. He died in Riverton, New Jersey. He was buried in Woodlands Cemetery in Philadelphia.
