Joseph Pope Balch (born August 9, 1822 – died December 2, 1872) was an important American businessman from Rhode Island. He also served as an officer in the Union Army during the start of the American Civil War.

Joseph Balch's Early Life and Career
Joseph Balch was a smart person who chose to work in business instead of going to college. When he was 14, he started working as a clerk in his father's drug store. Later, he became a partner in the business.
In 1841, he joined a local military group called the Providence Marine Corps of Artillery. By 1857, Balch had become the leader of Rhode Island's Second Militia brigade. This showed his early interest in military service.
Joseph Balch in the Civil War
When the American Civil War began, Joseph Balch was made a major. This happened on May 2, 1861. He joined the First Rhode Island Detached Militia, a special group that served for 90 days.
Major Balch took command of this regiment when its leader, Colonel Ambrose Burnside, was promoted. Balch then led the 1st Rhode Island during the First Battle of Bull Run. This important battle took place on July 21, 1861.
After their 90 days of service, Balch and his regiment were released on August 2, 1861. He then went back to the Rhode Island Militia. He continued to lead the Second Militia Brigade until the war ended.
Joseph Balch was honored for his bravery and steady leadership during battles. He received an honorary promotion, called a brevet brigadier general. This promotion was confirmed in 1868.
Life After the War
After the Civil War, Joseph Balch was a well-known person in Rhode Island. He had six daughters and one son. He was also a member of several community groups. These included the Rhode Island Society for the Encouragement of Domestic Industry. He was also part of the Providence Franklin Society.
Joseph Balch passed away suddenly at his home in 1872. He is buried at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence.
