Joseph Pérez (born January 14, 1931 – died October 8, 2020) was a famous French historian. He was an expert in the history of Spain and the countries of Latin America. Pérez studied how the modern Spanish state and Latin American nations came to be. He wrote many books about important historical figures and events. These included the independence movements in Latin America, Ferdinand and Isabella, the Catholic Monarchs, Emperor Charles V, and Philip II of Spain.

About Joseph Pérez

Joseph Pérez was born in Laroque-d'Olmes, a town in the south of France. This area, called Ariège, is close to the Spanish border. His parents were from Bocairent in Spain and had moved to France.

In 1955, he became a lecturer in Spanish at the Superior University of Saint-Cloud. He finished his big research project, called a doctoral thesis, in 1970. His thesis was about the Revolt of the Comuneros, a rebellion in Spain. It is still one of the most important books on this topic.

Pérez later became a professor at the University of Bordeaux 3. He taught about Spanish and Latin American culture and history. He was also a member of an important French science research group called the Directorio del Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS).

Joseph Pérez worked hard to share French and Spanish culture. He started a center in France called La Maison des Pays Iberiques, which focused on Spanish culture. From 1989 to 1996, he led the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid, Spain. This was a French cultural center that helped connect French and Hispanic cultures.

Joseph Pérez passed away on October 8, 2020, in Bordeaux. He was 89 years old.

Awards and Special Recognitions

Joseph Pérez received many awards for his work. His doctoral thesis won the Saintour prize. He was also the honorary president of the University of Bordeaux 3.

He was a special member of the Real Academia de la Historia, which is a royal academy for history in Spain. The University of Valladolid gave him an honorary doctorate. This means they recognized his great achievements, even though he didn't study there.

Other honors he received include:

On January 25, 2007, the town of Bocairent in Spain gave him a special title. They named him an "Adopted son of Bocairent." This was a very meaningful honor because his parents and three brothers were born there. A ceremony was held on March 30, 2007, to celebrate this event.

In 2014, Joseph Pérez won the Princess of Asturias Awards in Social Sciences. This is one of the most important awards in Spain.
