His Story
Josetxu Obregón was born in Bilbao, Spain. He first became a modern cellist. He even taught at the Madrid Royal Conservatory. He also played in the famous Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam.
Later, Josetxu decided to focus on early music. He studied Baroque cello with Lucia Swarts. This was at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. He also learned a lot from Anner Bijlsma. Josetxu has won eleven awards in international music competitions. He completed his studies in Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands.
Playing with Orchestras
Josetxu Obregón often plays with many different music groups. He was chosen as the main cellist for the European Union Baroque Orchestra. With them, he performed in 13 countries. He also played a special Vivaldi concerto for two cellos.
He performs with groups like the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment from the UK. He also plays with Arte dei Suonatori and the Rotterdams Baroque Ensemble. Josetxu is the leader of his own group called La Ritirata. As a solo artist, he has played cello concertos by Haydn and Boccherini. He also recorded Beethoven’s triple concerto with Mariana Todorova. He has appeared on recordings for many radio and TV stations. These include BBC Three (UK), NPO 3FM (Netherlands), and RTVE (Spain).
Performing Around the World
Josetxu Obregón has played at many important Early Music Festivals. These include the Fringe Festival Oudemuziek Utrecht in the Netherlands. He has also performed at the Ohrid Summer Festival in North Macedonia.
He made his first performances in America with a tour in the United States. He played in cities like New York City and Hartford. He continues to perform in many countries around the world.
His Special Instruments
Josetxu Obregón plays a very old cello. It was made by Sebastian Klotz in 1740. This cello was recently fixed up by Johannes Loescher. Josetxu also uses historical bows. These are special bows from different time periods. They were made by Kees van Hemert and Andreas Grutter.
