Early Life and Education
Josh Brecheen was born on June 19, 1979. He went to Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Oklahoma. In 1997, he was chosen as the Vice-president for the Southeast District of the Oklahoma FFA. The next year, he became the State FFA President. He then moved to Stillwater and continued his studies at Oklahoma State University. He served as State FFA President until 1999.
After his time with the FFA, Brecheen earned two degrees from Oklahoma State University. He studied animal science and agricultural communications. In 2004, he started working for U.S. Senator Tom Coburn. He continued this job until he was elected to the Oklahoma Senate. Besides his political work, he also owns a business that provides motivational speeches and an excavation service.
His Time in the Oklahoma Senate
In 2010, Josh Brecheen decided to run for the 6th district in the Oklahoma Senate. He ran without any opponents in the Republican primary election. In the main election, he ran against the Democratic Senator Jay Paul Gumm. Brecheen won the election in November.
During his first term as a senator, Brecheen suggested some new laws. One bill he proposed aimed to change the Pet Breeders Act. This act required pet breeders to provide basic care for their animals. Brecheen also suggested that the Oklahoma Legislature should meet every other year instead of every year. He also wanted to cut the pay for lawmakers. Another idea he had was to stop funding for public art projects in the state. He also introduced a bill to allow teachers to discuss both creation and evolution in public schools.
Brecheen served in the Oklahoma Senate for two terms, until 2018. He chose not to run again because he believes in limiting how long politicians can serve.

Brecheen finished second in the first primary election. This meant he had to go to a second election, called a runoff, against state Representative Avery Frix.
