Josué's Football Journey
Starting Out and Paços Ferreira
Josué was born in Valongo, Portugal. He joined FC Porto's youth team when he was nine years old. As a young adult player, he spent his first two seasons on loan to other teams. He played for S.C. Covilhã and F.C. Penafiel in Portugal, and VVV-Venlo in the Netherlands.
In 2011, Josué left Porto and joined F.C. Paços de Ferreira. He played his first top-league game on 17 September, playing the whole match in a 1–0 loss. In his second year, he played 23 league games. His team finished third, which was their best result ever. They even got to play in the UEFA Champions League. Josué was chosen as the Best Young Player in the league that season.
Back to Porto and Loans
On 29 May 2013, Josué returned to his old club, Porto, signing a four-year contract. On 10 August, he won his first trophy with Porto. He came on as a substitute in a 3–0 win against Vitória de Guimarães in the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. A week later, he scored his first goal for Porto from a penalty kick in a 3–1 win.
Josué then spent 18 months on loan at Bursaspor in Turkey. He played his first game in the Süper Lig on 30 August 2014. He helped his team reach the final of the Turkish Cup. He even scored two goals in one game during the group stage. On 26 January 2016, he returned to Portugal. He was loaned to S.C. Braga for the rest of the season. He scored against his parent club, Porto, in the final of the Taça de Portugal. Braga won the game in a penalty shootout, winning their first title in 50 years.
On 23 August 2016, Josué went back to Turkey. He joined Galatasaray on a loan for the season. He scored his first goal for the team on 25 December in a 5–1 home win.
Playing in Turkey and Israel
In August 2017, Josué left Porto for good. He signed a two-year contract with Osmanlıspor in Turkey's top league. He left the club in December. The next July, he joined Akhisarspor. His team finished second in the Turkish Cup. He scored in both games of a 5–2 win in the quarter-finals. In June 2019, after his team was moved to a lower league, he left the club.
In September 2019, Josué signed a two-year contract with Hapoel Be'er Sheva F.C. in Israel. He joined his fellow countryman Miguel Vítor there. They won the State Cup in his first season. Josué scored in the semi-finals and in the 2–0 final win.
In May 2020, Josué and Vítor agreed to lower their salaries to stay in Israel for another year. Ten months later, Josué extended his stay for one more season.
Success with Legia Warsaw
On 21 June 2021, Josué joined Legia Warsaw, the champions of Poland's top league, on a two-year contract. He and his teammate Yuri Ribeiro won the Polish Cup in 2023. They beat Raków Częstochowa 6–5 in a penalty shootout.
Josué scored 12 goals in 32 games in the 2022–23 season. His team finished second in the league. He also made seven assists. He was voted the league's Midfielder of the Season. On 29 October that year, he scored three goals (a hat-trick) in a 5–2 win. Because of his great play, he got a one-year extension on his contract.
On 5 October 2023, Josué and teammate Radovan Pankov had an incident with security staff after a match in the UEFA Europa Conference League. They were released the next day without any charges. On 14 December, Josué helped his team win 2–0 at home, which helped them qualify for the next round.
In May 2024, Josué was again nominated for the Ekstraklasa Midfielder of the Season award. Soon after, he announced he would leave Legia Warsaw when his contract ended on 30 June. In his last game for Legia, fans showed a banner that said in Portuguese: “Obrigado, capitão!” (lit. Thank you, Captain!). The fans cheered his name, and when he left the field, they gave him a standing ovation. He helped his team score both goals in a 2–1 win. He thanked the fans with his daughter. He left because the club's management did not want to offer him a new contract. This decision made many fans upset.
Joining Coritiba
On 14 August 2024, Josué signed with the Brazilian club Coritiba Foot Ball Club.
Playing for Portugal
Josué played 26 games for Portugal's youth teams. This included 17 games for the under-21 team. He played his first game for the senior national team on 11 October 2013. He played 21 minutes in a 1–1 draw against Israel during the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
