Josué's Football Journey
Starting Out and Playing for Paços
Josué was born in Valongo, Portugal. He joined FC Porto's youth football system when he was nine years old. As a young adult player, he spent his first two seasons on loan to other teams. He played for S.C. Covilhã and F.C. Penafiel in Portugal. He also played for VVV-Venlo in the Netherlands.
In the summer of 2011, Porto let Josué leave. He had only played two official games for them. He then signed with F.C. Paços de Ferreira. He played his first game in Portugal's top league, the Primeira Liga, on September 17. He played the whole game in a 1–0 loss against C.D. Nacional. In his second year with Paços, he played in 23 league games. His team finished third, which was their best result ever. This allowed them to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Josué was chosen as the Best Young Player in the league that season.
Returning to Porto and Loans
Josué went back to his old club, Porto, on May 29, 2013. He signed a four-year contract. He also moved with his manager, Paulo Fonseca. On August 10, he won his first trophy with Porto. He came on as a substitute in a 3–0 win against Vitória de Guimarães in the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. A week later, he scored his first goal for Porto. He started the game and scored a penalty kick in a 3–1 win against Vitória de Setúbal.
Josué was then loaned out from Porto for 18 months to Bursaspor in Turkey. He played his first game in the Süper Lig on August 30, 2014. He came on as a late substitute in a 0–2 loss to Galatasaray SK. He helped Bursaspor reach the final of the Turkish Cup. He scored two goals in a 3–2 win against Samsunspor in the group stage. On January 26, 2016, he returned to Portugal. He was loaned to S.C. Braga for the rest of that season. He scored against his main club, Porto, in the final of the Taça de Portugal. Braga won the game in a penalty shootout, winning their first title in 50 years.
On August 23, 2016, Josué went back to Turkey. He joined Galatasaray on a loan for the season. He scored his first goal for the team on December 25. It was the last goal in a 5–1 home win against Alanyaspor.
Playing for Osmanlıspor and Akhisarspor
Josué left Porto in August 2017. He signed a two-year contract with Osmanlıspor, another team in Turkey's top league. He left Osmanlıspor in December. The following July, he joined Akhisarspor with a similar contract. His team finished second in the Turkish Cup. They lost to his former club, Galatasaray. Josué scored in both games of their 5–2 win against Kasımpaşa S.K. in the quarter-finals. In June 2019, his team was relegated (moved down to a lower league). He then left the club.
Time with Hapoel Be'er Sheva
In September 2019, Josué signed with Hapoel Be'er Sheva F.C. in the Israeli Premier League. He joined his fellow Portuguese player Miguel Vítor. Later, David Simão also joined them. They won the State Cup in his first season. Josué scored in the semi-finals against Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv F.C. on June 10. He also scored in the 2–0 final win against Maccabi Petah Tikva F.C. on July 13.
In May 2020, Josué and Vítor agreed to lower their salaries to stay in Israel for another year. Ten months later, Josué extended his contract for one more season.
Playing for Legia Warsaw
On June 21, 2021, Josué joined Legia Warsaw, the champions of Poland's Ekstraklasa league. He signed a two-year contract. He and his teammate Yuri Ribeiro won the Polish Cup in 2023. They beat Raków Częstochowa 6–5 in a penalty shootout.
Josué scored 12 goals in 32 games in the 2022–23 season. His team from Warsaw finished second to Raków Częstochowa. He also made seven assists. He was voted the league's Midfielder of the Season. He was also nominated for Player of the Season, which was won by Kamil Grosicki. On October 29 of that year, he scored three goals (a hat-trick) in a 5–2 win against Jagiellonia Białystok. His great playing earned him a one-year extension to his contract.
On October 5, 2023, Josué was arrested by Dutch police. This happened with his teammate Radovan Pankov after a game against AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Europa Conference League. They were released the next day without any charges. On December 14, Josué helped Blaž Kramer score in the return game. Legia won 2–0 at home, which helped them qualify for the next round. The next day, UEFA fined AZ €40,000. This was for not providing enough security for the Polish team at the AZ Stadium.
In May 2024, Josué was again nominated for the Ekstraklasa Midfielder of the Season award. Soon after, he announced on Instagram that he would leave the Warsaw Stadium on June 30 when his contract ended. During his last game for Legia, fans showed a banner that said in Portuguese: “Obrigado, capitão!” (meaning "Thank you, Captain!"). The fans at the stadium cheered his name. When he left the field in the 90th minute, they gave him a standing ovation. He helped score both goals in the 2–1 win against Zagłębie Lubin. Later, he went to the Żyleta stand with his daughter to thank the fans. He left because the club's leaders, especially sporting director Jacek Zieliński, did not want to give him a new contract. This decision was announced three weeks before the end of the season. Many fans were upset, and manager Gonçalo Feio also disagreed with the decision.
Joining Coritiba
On August 14, 2024, Josué signed with the Brazilian club Coritiba Foot Ball Club. This team plays in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B league.
Playing for His Country
Josué played 26 games for Portugal at different youth levels. This included 17 games for the under-21 team. He played his first game for the senior national team on October 11, 2013. He played for 21 minutes in a 1–1 home game against Israel. This game was part of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
