At the 2006 European Championships, José Luis Blanco ran a smart race. He sped up with 500 meters left to go. He was leading the race with just one lap left to finish. In the final 150 meters, another runner, Jukka Keskisalo, passed him. But José Luis held on to finish in second place, winning the silver medal.
His fastest time ever in the 3000 meters steeplechase was 8 minutes and 12.86 seconds. He achieved this great time in Huelva, Spain, in June 2006.
Challenges and Cross-Country Running
After the 2010 European Championships, it was found that José Luis Blanco had used a banned substance. This happened during the Spanish Championships earlier that year. Because of this, he was not allowed to compete for two years. His bronze medal from the 2010 European Championships was taken away. The medal then went to the runner who finished fourth, Ion Luchianov.
