José Manuel Caballero Bonald (born November 11, 1926 – died May 9, 2021) was an important Spanish writer. He was known for his novels, lectures, and poetry. José Manuel was born in Jerez, a city in Spain.

Early Life and Education

José Manuel Caballero Bonald started his studies in Cádiz between 1944 and 1948. He studied nautical subjects, which means he learned about ships and sailing. During this time, he also began to write his very first poems.

A Career in Literature

Caballero Bonald had a long and interesting career in the world of books and writing. Around 1954, he became the Secretary of a magazine called Papeles de Son Armadans. Later, he became its Deputy Editor.

From 1971 to 1975, he worked at the Royal Spanish Academy. This is a very important place in Spain that helps keep the Spanish language correct. He worked in their Lexicography Seminar, which means he helped study and define words.

José Manuel also taught at a college in the United States. From 1974 to 1978, he was a professor at the Centre for Hispanic Studies at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. He taught students about modern Spanish literature.

Awards and Recognition

José Manuel Caballero Bonald received many honors for his writing. In 2012, he was given the famous Miguel de Cervantes Prize. This award is one of the highest honors for writers in the Spanish language. It recognized all his amazing work in Spanish literature.

Later Years

José Manuel Caballero Bonald passed away in Madrid on May 9, 2021. He was 94 years old when he died. His writings continue to be an important part of Spanish literature.
