José Rafael Campoy Gastélum was a Mexican Jesuit priest, teacher, and scholar. He was born on August 15, 1723, and passed away on December 21, 1777.

He was a very smart person who studied and taught many subjects. After the Jesuits were forced to leave Spanish lands in 1767, he moved to Italy. He lived there for ten more years until he died.

His Life Story

José Rafael Campoy was born in a place called Álamos. This area was part of New Navarre back then. Today, it is known as Sonora, a state in Mexico.

He came from a wealthy and respected family. His parents were Francisco Xavier Campoy and Andrea Gastélum.

Early Education and Teaching

After joining the Jesuits, José Rafael studied Humanities. This included subjects like history, literature, and philosophy.

He later became a teacher himself. He taught Philosophy in a city called Puebla. He also taught Grammar in San Luis Potosí City. While in San Luis Potosí, he gave a special speech. This speech was for the funeral of King Philip V of Spain.

Becoming a Priest

From 1748 to 1751, José Rafael studied Theology. This is the study of religious beliefs. He studied at a famous school in Mexico City. It was called the Colegio Máximo San Pedro y San Pablo.

In 1751, he became a priest there. After his studies, he lived in Veracruz for about fifteen years.

The Expulsion of the Jesuits

In 1767, something big happened. Charles III of Spain, the king, ordered all Jesuits to leave Spanish lands. José Rafael was teaching Philosophy and Theology in Veracruz at the time.

On July 26, 1767, he had to leave. He sailed on a ship called La Flora. It was a long journey across the ocean.

Life in Italy

After his long trip, José Rafael arrived in Ferrara, Italy. He then moved to Bologna, where he lived for the rest of his life.

He spent his time in Bologna studying and writing. He was very knowledgeable about the geography of America. He also focused on his faith.

José Rafael Campoy died in Bologna, Italy, on December 21, 1777.
