Juan Bautista Maíno, also known as Mayno, was a Spanish painter from the Baroque period. He was born in October 1581 in Pastrana, Spain, and passed away on April 1, 1649, in Madrid.

Biography of Juan Bautista Maíno

Maíno's father was a merchant who sold fabrics from Milan, Italy. His mother was a Portuguese noblewoman. Both of his parents worked for Ana de Mendoza, Princess of Eboli, who was also the Duchess of Pastrana.

Some historians believe that Maíno learned to paint from El Greco, another famous artist. However, there is no official proof of this. We do know for sure that Maíno lived in Italy from 1600 to 1608. While there, he learned a lot from the works of Caravaggio and his students. These included artists like Orazio Gentileschi, Guido Reni, and Annibale Carracci.

When Maíno returned to Pastrana, his paintings showed these new influences. One example is his painting of the "Trinity". He created it for an altar at the Monasterio de Concepcionistas Franciscanas [es].

In March 1611, Maíno moved to Toledo, Spain. The next year, he painted a large artwork called "Altarpiece of the Four Days of Easter" for the Dominican Order. This painting is now at the Museo del Prado and is probably his most famous work. Other important paintings from this time include the "Adoration of the Magi" and the "Adoration of the Shepherds".

In June 1613, Maíno joined the Dominican Order and moved into the Monastery of San Pedro Mártir. Becoming a friar meant he painted less often. Still, he made other versions of the "Adoration of the Shepherds." One of these is at the Hermitage Museum in Russia. Another can be seen at the Meadows Museum in Dallas.

In 1620, King Philip III invited Maíno to his royal court. The king wanted Maíno to teach drawing to his son, who would later become King Philip IV. During this time, Maíno also supported a young artist named Diego Velázquez. Maíno chose Velázquez in a painting competition. This helped Velázquez become a well-known artist at the royal court. Sadly, the painting Velázquez created for this contest was destroyed in a big fire in 1734. The fire happened at the Royal Alcázar of Madrid.

Juan Bautista Maíno passed away at the Colegio y convento de Santo Tomás in Madrid. Friar Juan Rizi might have been one of his students there.
