Juan Buenaventura de Borja y Armendia (born 1564 in Gandía, Valencia, Spain – died 1628 in Santafé de Bogotá) was an important Spanish noble. He belonged to the famous House of Borja family. He held many powerful jobs in the New Kingdom of Granada, which was a Spanish colony. He is best known for being the President of the Real Audiencia de Santa Fe de Bogotá, a high court and government body.

Life and Career

Juan Buenaventura was the son of Fernando de Borja Aragón y Castro and Violante de Armendia. His grandfather was Saint Francis Borgia, who was a Duke and an important religious leader.

Early Education and Royal Recognition

Juan studied at the University of Alcalá, where he earned a degree in arts. Later, he went to the University of Salamanca to study canon law, which is church law. In 1604, King Philip III of Spain officially recognized Juan's noble status. This happened during a special meeting in Valencia.

Leading the Real Audiencia

Juan de Borja took on many important roles in the New Kingdom of Granada. His most famous job was being the President of the Real Audiencia de Santa Fe de Bogotá. He was chosen for this role in 1605 when he was 41 years old. He served as president for 22 years, until he died.

Important Actions as President

During his time as president, Juan de Borja led several campaigns. One of the most important was the effort to bring peace to the Pijao people between 1605 and 1615. He also helped set up the Sancta Tribunal de la Inquisición (a religious court) in Cartagena de Indias. He ordered the creation of a grammar guide for the Chibchan languages, which were spoken by local people. He also made sure that a tax called the Alcabala was collected in more cities.

New Institutions and Honors

In 1605, Juan de Borja created the Tribunal de Cuentas de Santafé, which was a court for financial matters. Later, in 1620, a royal order led to the creation of a Mint in the New Kingdom of Granada. This mint made coins for the region. In 1610, he received a special honor. He was made a Knight of the Order of Santiago, a famous Spanish military and religious order.

Death and Legacy

Juan de Borja died in Santafé de Bogotá in 1628. He was buried at the main cathedral in the city. After his death, there was a short time when no new president was immediately chosen. An official named Lesmes de Espinosa Saravia took charge of government matters until a new president was appointed in 1630.

On September 3, 1597, Juan de Borja married Violante Miguel de Heredia y Forcadell. Violante was from Ulldecoma, Tarragona, Spain. Juan and Violante had eight children together. One of their sons, Juan de Borja y Miguel, started a family in Riobamba. This family later became important Borja families in Ecuadorian and Chilean history.
