Juan Cerón facts for kids

Juan Cerón was a Spanish explorer and leader known as a Conquistador. He served as governor of Puerto Rico twice, from 1509 to 1510 and again from 1511 to 1512. Back then, Puerto Rico was called San Juan. He was born in Écija, Spain.

Becoming Governor of Puerto Rico

Juan Cerón's time as governor was shaped by disagreements between powerful Spanish leaders. These leaders included Nicolas de Ovando and Christopher Columbus' son, Diego Colón.

First Term as Governor

In 1509, Diego Colón became the governor of Hispaniola. He sent Juan Cerón to Puerto Rico. Cerón was given the title of Alcalde Mayor, which was like a chief judge and mayor. His job was to replace Juan Ponce de León. Ponce de León had just started exploring and settling Puerto Rico the year before. Many of the early settlers were unhappy about this change.

Nicolas de Ovando supported Ponce de León. He spoke up for him in Spain. As a result, the Spanish Crown gave Ponce de León the title of Captain General and Governor of San Juan Bautista (Puerto Rico).

Second Term as Governor

However, in 1511, Diego Colón pushed for Cerón to be governor again. So, Cerón was appointed governor once more. Ponce de León then left Puerto Rico for his first big adventure to Florida.

Challenges and Removal from Office

Cerón's second time as governor did not end well. There were complaints about how he managed the "Repartimiento of Indians." This was a system where native people were assigned to Spanish settlers for labor. Because of these complaints, the Spanish Crown decided to remove him. In 1513, Ponce de León was reappointed as governor of Puerto Rico.
