Life of John Baptist
Juan García López-Rico was born in 1561. He was the fifth of eight children. His parents were Xixón and Isabel García Marcos López-Rico. Three of his siblings also chose a religious life. Juan felt a strong call to serve God when he was fifteen years old.
When he was fifteen, he met Teresa of Avila. This meeting inspired him to join a religious order. He first thought about joining the Carmelites. However, he chose a different path. He studied grammar with the Carmelites in Almodóvar del Campo. Then, he studied theology in Baeza and Toledo.
At nineteen, on June 28, 1580, he joined the Trinitarian Order. He made his official promises on June 29, 1581. He became a priest in 1585.
Reforming the Trinitarian Order
John Baptist wanted to make changes to the Trinitarian Order. He got permission for his reforms on August 20, 1599. Pope Clement VIII approved his plans. He was inspired by Teresa of Avila, whom he had met years before. He started to reform the monasteries. He continued his work even when he faced challenges and people disagreed with him.
He passed away in 1613. He died from a kidney disease called nephritis.
Becoming a Saint
The process to make John Baptist a saint began on February 16, 1677. Pope Innocent XI gave him the title Servant of God. This means the first step towards sainthood had started. Two investigations were held in Spain. People shared stories and documents about his life. All this information was sent to Rome for review.
Pope Clement XIII agreed that John Baptist lived a very good and holy life. On August 10, 1760, he was called Venerable. This is another important step in the process.
Miracles and Canonization
For someone to become a saint, miracles must happen through their prayers. Two miracles were approved that happened because of John Baptist's prayers. Because of these miracles, Pope Pius VII beatified him on September 26, 1819. This means he was given the title "Blessed."
Later, a third miracle was approved. This allowed Pope Paul VI to officially make him a saint. John Baptist of the Conception was canonized on May 25, 1975.
