Judy's Early Music Journey
Judy Dyble was born in London. Her very first band was called Judy and The Folkmen, which she was part of from 1964 to 1966. They made some demo recordings, but these were never officially released.
In 1967, Judy became the first singer for Fairport Convention. This band started with Ashley Hutchings, Richard Thompson, and Simon Nicol. They recorded their first album with Judy. At that time, they often played American songs and their own original music. Their first single was "If I Had a Ribbon Bow".
Fairport Convention also played songs by Joni Mitchell before she became well-known in the UK. They included two of her songs on their first album, Fairport Convention.
In the late 1960s, Judy performed with Fairport Convention alongside famous artists like Jimi Hendrix and Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd. Judy also sang on The Incredible String Band's 1968 album The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter. She later shared that she left Fairport Convention.
After Fairport Convention, Judy joined the band Giles, Giles and Fripp. She recorded demo songs with them. This group later became the well-known progressive rock band King Crimson.
Judy then formed the duo Trader Horne with Jackie McAuley. The band was named after John Peel's nanny. They released one album called Morning Way in 1969. Judy wrote the song "Morning Way" and helped write "Velvet to Atone". Trader Horne performed with bands like Humble Pie, Yes, and Genesis. The duo broke up before a big festival. In 2008, Trader Horne was featured in a book called 500 Lost Gems of the 60s.
Judy also worked with other musicians in a group called DC & the MBs. In 1973, Judy took a break from music to work with her husband, Simon Stable. She later worked as a librarian.
Judy made special guest appearances at the Fairport's Cropredy Convention several times. She sang songs like Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides, Now" and the Everly Brothers' "When Will I Be Loved". She appeared in 1981, 1982, 1997, 2002, and 2007.
Judy's Return to Music in the 2000s
For a long time, the only recordings by Judy Dyble available were from the first Fairport Convention album. However, her album Morning Way was re-released on CD in 2000.
In 2003, Judy started writing and performing music again. She released her first new album, Enchanted Garden, in 2004. This was followed by Spindle and The Whorl in 2006. These albums had limited releases. She also performed at Cropredy in 2007 with the original Fairport Convention lineup.
On 3 March 2008, Judy released a single with the band The Conspirators. It included a new version of Fairport Convention's "One Sure Thing" and The Conspirators' "Take Me To Your Leader". This single reached No. 7 on the official UK Indie Singles Chart.
Her next album, Talking with Strangers, was recorded in 2008. Tim Bowness and Alistair Murphy helped write and produce it. Many other musicians joined in, including Robert Fripp, Simon Nicol, and Ian McDonald.
In July 2009, Judy performed with Fairport Convention's original lineup at the Barbican Theatre. This was their first performance together in almost 40 years, apart from the occasional Cropredy shows.
Talking With Strangers was released in August 2009 and received good reviews. Many radio stations played the long track "Harpsong". Judy also did interviews on BBC local radio stations.
In May 2009, early copies of her new album with Robert Fripp were sent out. On 27 August 2009, Judy played an intimate solo concert at the 100 Club in London. This was her first solo show in London in over 40 years. A vinyl version of the album was released in 2010. Judy also added vocals to a single by the band Kings Cross.
"Harpsong" won an award for Best Original Song in January 2010. The album was also featured in "Best of 2009" lists by Classic Rock magazine.
Later Works and Legacy
Judy completed an album with Alistair Murphy called Flow and Change, released in July 2013. Most songs were co-written with Murphy. Other musicians like Matt Malley and Pat Mastelotto also contributed.
In 2013, Judy worked with Oliver Kersbergen of Sleepyard. They co-wrote three songs. "Blue Barracuda" was released on the Füxa album Dirty D in August 2013. "Rainy Day Vibration" and "Satellite Calling" were released on Sleepyard's album Black Sails in January 2014.
In March 2015, Judy released a 3-CD collection of her music called Gathering the Threads (Fifty Years of Stuff). In October 2015, the Trader Horne album Morning Way was re-released.
In November 2015, Judy Dyble and Jackie McAuley reunited as Trader Horne for a concert in London. They performed the entire Morning Way album live.
Judy spent much of 2015 and 2016 writing her autobiography, An Accidental Musician, which was published in April 2016. She also worked on new albums, Summer Dancing (with Andy Lewis) released in August 2017, and Earth is Sleeping in 2018. She also sang a duet with David Longdon on "The Ivy Gate" for the Big Big Train album Grimspound in April 2017.
Judy performed at Fairport's Cropredy Convention Festival with her own band. She also appeared with the original members of Fairport Convention to celebrate their 50th Anniversary in 2017.
A new album with David Longdon, Between A Breath and a Breath, was released in September 2020. It featured seven new songs with lyrics by Judy and music by Longdon.
Judy Dyble passed away on 12 July 2020, at the age of 71, after an illness.

Note: Eight songs on Live at the BBC were recorded for John Peel's Top Gear radio show. Four songs were broadcast on 10 December 1967: Let's Get Together, One Sure Thing, Lay Down Your Weary Tune, and Chelsea Morning. The other four songs were broadcast on 3 March 1968: Violets of Dawn, If (Stomp), Time Will Show the Wiser, and If I Had a Ribbon Bow. All these recordings came from "off air" sources, not the original BBC tapes.
