Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges (born November 7, 1799 – died December 23, 1875) was a French writer from Paris. He was one of the most active writers of libretti (stories for operas and ballets) in the 1800s. He often worked with other writers to create his plays.

Saint-Georges' first work was a play called Saint-Louis ou les deux dîners (1823). After that, he wrote many operas and ballets. In 1829, he became the manager of the Opéra-Comique in Paris.

Famous Works

Saint-Georges wrote many famous libretti. These include:

Most of his opera stories were for opéras comiques. These are a type of French opera with spoken parts and songs. However, La reine de Chypre (1841) was a grand opera, which is a longer, more serious type of opera.

Saint-Georges wrote over seventy stage plays. He often worked with a famous writer named Eugène Scribe. He also wrote novels, like Un Mariage de prince.

His Style

Saint-Georges had an old-fashioned way of writing. His stories often had surprising twists and unlikely events. He didn't focus much on making characters feel very real. He even liked to dress and act like people from the 1700s in his daily life!
