Julia Hartwig-Międzyrzecka (born August 14, 1921 – died July 14, 2017) was a famous Polish writer, poet, and translator. Many people consider her one of Poland's most important poets.

Life and Career
Julia Hartwig was born and grew up in Lublin, Poland. She studied Polish and French literature at Warsaw University. Later, she continued her studies at the Catholic University of Lublin.
Early Writings and Travels
Her very first poems appeared in a journal called Odrodzenie in 1944. After her studies, Hartwig lived in Paris, France, from 1947 to 1950. In 1954, she published a collection of articles titled Z niedalekich podróży, which means From Nearby Places. Her first book of poems, Pożegnania (Farewells), came out in 1956.
Time in the United States
From 1970 to 1974, Julia Hartwig lived in the United States. While there, she joined the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa. She also taught at several universities, sharing her knowledge and love for literature. After these years, she moved back to Warsaw, Poland.
Translations and Recognition
Julia Hartwig was also a talented translator. She translated French poetry by famous writers like Guillaume Apollinaire and Henri Michaux. She also wrote books about Apollinaire and another writer named Gérard de Nerval. She even translated works by American poets such as Robert Bly and Marianne Moore. Her own poetry has been translated into many languages, including English, French, Italian, and German.
Awards and Honors
Throughout her career, Julia Hartwig received many important awards. These include the Jurzykowski Prize and the Thornton Wilder Prize. She also won the Georg Trakl Poetry Prize. She was nominated six times for the prestigious Nike Award, which is a major literary prize in Poland. In 2014, she won the Wisława Szymborska Award for her poetry book Zapisane.
Personal Life
In 1954, Julia Hartwig married another poet named Artur Międzyrzecki. He passed away in 1996. Julia Hartwig herself died on July 14, 2017, in Pennsylvania, USA. She was 95 years old. She was also the sister of the well-known photographer Edward Hartwig.
