Julie Dreyfus (born January 24, 1966) is a talented French actress. She is very well known in Japan, where she first appeared on TV in the late 1980s. This was on a French language lesson program.
Julie Dreyfus also appeared as a guest and judge on the popular TV show Iron Chef. Many people in Western countries know her from the Quentin Tarantino movies Kill Bill: Volume 1 and Inglourious Basterds. In these films, she played characters named Sofie Fatale and Francesca Mondino. Besides her native French, she can speak English, German, and Japanese fluently.

Early Life and Moving to Japan
Julie Dreyfus was born and grew up in Paris, France. She is the only child of actress Pascale Audret and producer Francis Dreyfus. Her father had Romanian Jewish and Alsatian Jewish family roots. Her mother was of French background.
Julie spent her summer holidays in the United Kingdom. When she was a child, she enjoyed watching early movies by Woody Allen with her mother. In 1985, she started learning Japanese at the University of Paris. She became interested in Japanese architecture after studying interior design.
Starting a Career in Japan
Julie moved to Japan to study Japanese at the Osaka University of Foreign Studies. She took an intense six-month course. She thought she would find a job in interior design after her studies. After finishing the course, she moved to Tokyo. She worked part-time in a design studio and continued her private Japanese lessons.
In 1988, she became a French language teacher on a morning TV show. The show was on the NHK educational channel. The producer, Motoyoshi Sei, hired Julie to make the show more exciting. He changed it into a mystery drama with different episodes. Soon, Japanese TV bosses cast Julie in several TV and film roles. This helped her become a famous "gaijin tarento" (foreign talent) in Japan. She also served as a judge on the popular cooking show Iron Chef.
Acting in Movies
Julie Dreyfus played the character Sofie Fatale in Quentin Tarantino's 2003 movie, Kill Bill: Volume 1. This film is known for its action and unique style.
In 2007, Julie was part of the jury at the Gérardmer Film Festival. This festival honored her Kill Bill co-star, David Carradine.
Later Film Roles
Julie Dreyfus appeared in the movie Vinyan in 2008. In 2009, she was in Tarantino's war movie Inglourious Basterds. She played Francesca Mondino, a fictional French interpreter. She was also a translator in a segment called "Merde" in the movie Tokyo!, directed by Leos Carax.
