Julie Dreyfus (born January 24, 1966) is a French actress. She is very famous in Japan, where she first appeared on TV. This was in the late 1980s, on a French language lesson show.
Julie Dreyfus also appeared on the TV show Ryōri no Tetsujin, known as Iron Chef. She was a guest and a judge. Many people in Western countries know her from Quentin Tarantino's movies. She played Sofie Fatale in Kill Bill: Volume 1. She was also Francesca Mondino in Inglourious Basterds. Besides French, she speaks English, German, and Japanese.
Early life and career beginnings
Julie Dreyfus was born and grew up in Paris, France. She is the only child of actress Pascale Audret and producer Francis Dreyfus. Her father had Romanian Jewish and Alsatian Jewish family roots. Her mother was French. Julie spent her summer holidays in the United Kingdom.
As a child, she watched early Woody Allen movies with her mother. In 1985, she started learning Japanese. She studied at the University of Paris. She became interested in Japanese architecture. This made her want to learn the language.
She moved to Japan to study Japanese for six months. She thought she would work in interior design. After her course, she moved to Tokyo. She worked part-time in a design studio. She also continued her private Japanese lessons.
In 1988, she became a French language teacher. This was for a morning TV show on NHK. The show was a mystery drama. The producer hired Julie to make the show more exciting. She helped turn it into an episode series. Soon, Japanese TV and film bosses cast her in many roles. She became a "gaijin tarento", which means a foreign talent. She was also a judge on the popular cooking show Iron Chef.
Movie roles
Julie Dreyfus played Sofie Fatale in Quentin Tarantino's 2003 film, Kill Bill Volume 1. In 2007, she was part of the Gérardmer Film Festival. This festival honored her Kill Bill co-star, David Carradine.
In 2008, Julie Dreyfus appeared in the movie Vinyan. She also acted in Tarantino's war movie Inglourious Basterds in 2009. She played Francesca Mondino, a French interpreter. She was a fictional mistress for a Nazi propagandist. She also played a translator in the film Tokyo!.
