About Julie Manet
Julie Manet was born in Paris, France. She was the only child of two famous people. Her mother was the artist Berthe Morisot. Her father was Eugène Manet, who was the younger brother of the well-known painter Édouard Manet.
When Julie was 16 years old, both her parents passed away. This meant she became an orphan. After this, the poet and writer Stéphane Mallarmé became her guardian. She then went to live with her cousins. Many artist friends of her family also helped her, especially Renoir.
Throughout her life, Julie often posed for paintings. She was a model for her mother and other Impressionist artists. These artists included Renoir and her uncle Édouard Manet.
Her Teenage Diary
Julie Manet kept a diary when she was a teenager. This diary was later published in English. Its title is Growing up with the Impressionists.
Her diary gives us a special look into the lives of French painters. She wrote about artists like Renoir, Degas, Monet, and Sisley. She also wrote about important events happening in France. These included the visit of Tsar Nicholas II in 1896. She also wrote about the Dreyfus Affair, which was a big political event at the time.
Julie's Family Life
Julie's mother, Berthe Morisot, passed away in 1895. Julie was only 16 years old at that time.
In May 1900, Julie married a painter named Ernest Rouart. He was also an engraver. Ernest was the son of another painter, Henri Rouart. Their wedding took place in Passy, a part of Paris. It was a double wedding ceremony. Julie's cousin, Jeannine Gobillard, also got married that day to Paul Valéry.
Julie and Ernest had three children. Their names were Julien (born in 1901), Clément (born in 1906), and Denis (born in 1908). Julien and Denis later inherited some of their grandmother Berthe Morisot's paintings. These paintings are now kept in the Marmottan Monet Museum.
