Musical Journey
Early Career
Roberts was born in London, England. She started her music career in 1982, first recording under the name Julie Roberts. A year later, she sang on the top 10 hit single "It's Over" by the group Funk Masters. This song helped people notice her amazing talent.
In 1984, she released a single called "The Old Rugged Cross". During this time, she also became the lead singer for the jazz group Working Week, where she performed for four years. In 1986, she even co-hosted a music show called Solid Soul on Channel 4.
A Voice in Demand
Besides her own songs, Roberts was a popular backing vocalist, which means she sang harmony and support for other lead singers. In 1990, she sang on albums for pop star Cathy Dennis and the band Breathe.
She also worked closely with the British house music group L.A. Mix on two of their albums. She was the featured singer on their 1991 single "We Shouldn't Hold Hands in the Dark".
Solo Stardom in the 1990s
The 1990s were a huge decade for Roberts as a solo dance music artist. In 1993, she released the song "Caught in the Middle", which became a hit.
Her next single, "I Want You", was a massive success. It reached number one on the dance music charts in the United States and even made it to number 44 on the main U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. Following these hits, she released her album Natural Thing in 1994.
Later in the 1990s, she continued to release popular songs in the UK, including "So Good" and a cover of "Bad Girls".
