June Marlowe (born Gisela Valaria Goetten, November 6, 1903 – March 10, 1984) was an American actress. She started her acting career during the silent film era. She is best known for playing "Miss Crabtree" in the Our Gang short movies.

June Marlowe's Acting Career

June Marlowe was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Her parents were from Germany. She acted in many silent films in the 1920s. She even appeared in movies with famous actors like John Barrymore and the dog Rin Tin Tin.

She started acting soon after finishing Hollywood High School in 1923. In 1924, she signed a contract with Warner Brothers. In 1925, she was named one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars. This was a group of young actresses thought to be rising stars.

Her career was going well until "talking pictures" came along. These were movies with sound and dialogue. It was hard for June Marlowe to switch from silent films to talking ones. By 1930, she was acting less often.

Becoming Miss Crabtree

One day, June Marlowe met director Robert F. McGowan by chance. This happened in a Los Angeles department store. McGowan was looking for an actress to play the schoolteacher in the Our Gang comedy series.

The producer, Hal Roach, suggested that June Marlowe wear a blonde wig. This was to match the hair of the main child actor, Jackie Cooper. After this, she got the part of Miss Crabtree.

June Marlowe and Jackie Cooper acted together in three Our Gang films. These were Teacher's Pet, School's Out, and Love Business. She also had a small role in the 1931 film Little Daddy.

Besides her work in Our Gang, June Marlowe also appeared in Pardon Us. This was the first full-length movie for the famous comedy duo Laurel and Hardy. They were also stars from Hal Roach Studios.

June Marlowe's Miss Crabtree character was used in two more short films. These were Shiver My Timbers (1931) and Readin' and Writin' (1932). After Jackie Cooper left Our Gang in 1931, she acted in movies for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).

Later Life and Passing

On July 2, 1933, June Marlowe married Rodney Sprigg. He was a businessman from Hollywood. She then stopped acting in movies to become a housewife. They stayed married until Rodney Sprigg passed away in 1982.

In her later years, June Marlowe had Parkinson's disease. She passed away from complications of the disease on March 10, 1984.

June Marlowe was first buried at the San Fernando Mission Cemetery. Later, she was moved and re-buried at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

In Popular Culture

The name of Edna Krabappel, a cartoon character from The Simpsons, was inspired by June Marlowe. In 1990, the writers Wallace Wolodarsky and Jay Kogen chose the name. It was a play on the fruit "crabapple" and a nod to Miss Crabtree from the Our Gang shorts.
