Jupiter Island is a long, narrow piece of land in Florida. It is called a barrier island because it protects the mainland from ocean storms. The island is located off the coast of Martin and Palm Beach counties.
To the east, Jupiter Island faces the mighty Atlantic Ocean. To the north, it is bordered by the St. Lucie Inlet, which is a waterway connecting to the ocean. On its west side, you'll find the calm waters of the Indian River. To the south, it ends at the Jupiter Inlet.
Jupiter Island was not always one single island. It used to be two separate islands! The northern part was called Long Island. The southern part was known as Jupiter Island. An inlet, or narrow waterway, once separated them. This inlet was near an area called North Jupiter Narrows and a lake known as Peck Lake.

Jupiter Island is divided between two counties in Florida: Palm Beach County and Martin County.
Palm Beach County Areas

Unincorporated Palm Beach County Areas
Some parts of Jupiter Island in Palm Beach County are not part of any town. These "unincorporated" areas are managed directly by the county.
- One area is between two buildings called Tequesta Towers and Blowing Rocks Condo.
- Another area is north of Coral Cove Park. This park is a county park, but it is actually inside the Tequesta village limits.
Martin County Areas
The northern part of Jupiter Island is in Martin County.
Town of Jupiter Island
The town of Jupiter Island is known for being a very wealthy community. It starts at the border between Palm Beach and Martin counties. It stretches north to include the southern part of the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge.
A famous singer, Celine Dion, and her family used to live on Jupiter Island until 2013. The zip code for the town is 33455, which is also used for much of Hobe Sound.
Unincorporated Martin County Areas
The northernmost part of Jupiter Island, from the town limits of Jupiter Island up to the St. Lucie Inlet, is also unincorporated. This means it's managed by Martin County.
- It includes the northern section of the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge helps protect many different animals and plants.
- It also includes St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park. This park is located north of the wildlife refuge, all the way to the St. Lucie Inlet. You can only reach this park by boat, making it a special place to visit.
- Blowing Rocks Preserve is an important preserve on Jupiter Island. It is located in Hobe Sound, Martin County. It is famous for its unique rock formations where ocean waves can "blow" water through holes in the rocks.
Getting Around Jupiter Island
The main road that runs north and south on Jupiter Island is called Beach Road. This road is also known as County Road 707. It starts at the Tequesta Bridge, which crosses the Intracoastal Waterway. It continues north to Bridge Road in the Town of Jupiter Island. At Bridge Road, CR 708 turns left. This road leads to Hobe Sound by crossing the Hobe Sound Bridge.
