Justin's father, Carlton Bailey, was also a professional athlete. He played gridiron football as a linebacker for the Buffalo Bills in the National Football League (NFL). Carlton played for five seasons and even scored a touchdown that helped his team reach the Super Bowl XXVI in 1992.
Justin started playing minor ice hockey with the Buffalo Regals. During the 2010–11 season, a shoulder injury meant he only played 22 games. Even so, he scored 13 goals and made nine assists. He also helped his team reach the state championship finals.
