Justin Howard's Basketball Career
Playing College Basketball
Justin Howard played college basketball for Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. He was part of the team from 1999 to 2003. In his last year, he was one of the team captains. The Mercer Bears team won the Atlantic Sun Conference championship that season. Justin also earned "all-academic" honors for three of his four years. This means he was a great student as well as a great player! When he started at Mercer in 1999, he was 6 feet 9 inches tall and weighed 335 pounds. By the end of his career, he was 6 feet 11 inches tall and weighed 255 pounds.
Starting a Professional Career
After finishing college in 2003, Justin Howard began his professional basketball journey. His first professional team was the Zorros de Morelia in Mexico. He played in the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional. In that first year, he scored about 21.7 points and grabbed 10.8 rebounds per game. He was also very accurate, shooting 58% from the field. He ended that season as the top rebounder in the league!
Playing in South America and Asia
In 2004, Justin played in Chile for the Liga Sudamericana. He continued to put up impressive numbers, averaging 22.1 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. His team was the first from Chile to win their group stage. This allowed them to move on to the knockout rounds of the South American Basketball Championship. He also played for short periods in Argentina and China in 2004.
Justin returned to play in Mexico in 2005. He had an amazing season, scoring 24.7 points and getting 11.8 rebounds per game. He shot 64% from the field. He finished second in the league for rebounds and third for scoring. He helped his team, Fuerza Regia de Monterrey, reach the conference finals.
In 2006, he played in two different leagues in Mexico. He played for Circuito de Baloncesto de la Costa del Pacífico (CIBACOPA), where he scored 34 points per game. He also played for the Halcones Rojos Veracruz in the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional. In 2007, he played in Argentina for the defending champions, Comodoro Rivadavia. He also played in the South American Basketball Championship and briefly in Syria.
In 2008, Justin played for Fuerza Guinda de Nogales in the CIBACOPA league again. He finished second in the league for both rebounds and blocks. He averaged 22.7 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game. He also shot 67% from the field.
Playing in Europe
From 2008 to 2009, Justin Howard started his career in Europe. He joined the BG Karlsruhe team in the German 2nd Basketball Bundesliga. In that season, he was fourth in the league for rebounding. He averaged 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 1 block per game. He also shot 56% from the field.
For the 2009–2010 season, he moved to Spain to play for CB Guadalajara in the LEB league. He was recognized with "all league Honorable Mention" honors. He finished second in the league for rebounding. His averages were 14.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, with 59% shooting accuracy.
The next season (2010–2011), he stayed in Spain and played for BC Andorra. His team made it all the way to the league finals! He averaged 10.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1 block per game. He led his team in rebounds and was their second-highest scorer.
In the 2011–2012 season, Justin returned to BG Karlsruhe in Germany. He had an amazing performance, averaging 16.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game. He shot 60% from the field and 70% from the free-throw line. He was among the top 8 scorers in the league. He also led the league in rebounding. After this season, he was named "Center of the Year" by Eurobasket. He was also chosen for the "All Pro A first team," "All Imports team," and "All Defensive team" for the league.
Returning to Asia
In 2013, Justin moved to Asia to play for the Saigon Heat from Vietnam. This team was part of the Asean Basketball League. He continued to put up great numbers, averaging 20.43 points, 13.14 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 1.7 steals per game. He led the league in points and was third in rebounding.
Later in 2013, he moved to Thailand to play in the Thailand Basketball League. He scored 26.8 points and grabbed 15.7 rebounds per game, along with 3 blocks. He helped his team reach the semifinals.
In 2014, Justin Howard played in the Thailand Basketball League again. This time, he joined the defending champions, Hi-Tech Bangkok City. From 2015 onwards, he played in the Asean Basketball League once more, this time for the Singapore Slingers. He continued his professional career until 2018.
