Justina Blakeney grew up in Berkeley, California. Her family background is quite diverse. Her mother's family came from Eastern Europe and were Jewish. Her father was African-American, Native American, Irish, and French. He also converted to Judaism.

She graduated from UCLA in 2001. She earned a degree in World Arts and Cultures. During her third year of college, she traveled to Italy.
