Jüri Jaakson (born January 16, 1870 – died April 20, 1942) was an important Estonian lawyer and leader. He helped shape Estonia's early years as an independent country.

Early Life and Education

Jüri Jaakson was born in a place called Karula. He went to school at the Hugo Treffner Gymnasium in Tartu. After that, he studied law at the University of Tartu from 1892 to 1896. He finished his law studies in 1896.
From 1897 to 1914, he worked as a lawyer in Viljandi and Riga. A lawyer is someone who helps people with legal problems and understands laws. Later, from 1915 to 1919, Jaakson was part of the board for the Tallinn Municipal Bank.
Political Career and Leadership
Jüri Jaakson became very active in politics. From 1917 to 1918, he was a member of the Estonian Provincial Assembly. This was an important group that helped govern Estonia.
In 1918, he worked for the Estonian Provisional Government. His job was to take back property from the German forces that had occupied Estonia during World War I.
Serving as Minister of Justice
From 1918 to 1920, Jaakson served as the Minister of Justice for Estonia. This meant he was in charge of the country's legal system. He helped make sure laws were fair and followed.
Role in the Riigikogu
From 1920 to 1932, Jüri Jaakson was a member of the Riigikogu. This is Estonia's parliament, where elected representatives make laws for the country. He served for many years, helping to guide the young nation.
Becoming State Elder of Estonia
From December 1924 to December 1925, Jaakson held a very important position. He was the State Elder of Estonia. This role was like being the head of state and government for the country. It was a big responsibility to lead Estonia during that time.
Later Public Service
After being State Elder, Jaakson continued to serve his country. From 1926 to 1940, he was the president of the Bank of Estonia. This bank manages the country's money and economy. He was also a member of the National Economic Council, which advised on economic matters.
Later, from 1938 to 1940, Jaakson was a member of the National Council. This was the upper house of Estonia's parliament. He also helped start several banks and was involved in many organizations. These included groups for farmers and economic unions.
Final Years
In June 1940, the Soviet Union took control of Estonia. On June 14, 1941, Jüri Jaakson was taken away by Soviet authorities. He was sent to Russia. Sadly, he passed away while imprisoned in Sosva, Sverdlovsk Oblast, in 1942.
