Kössen is a lovely village in the Tyrol region of Austria. It's part of the Kitzbühel district. You can find it about 24 kilometers (15 miles) north of Kitzbühel town. It's also near the border with Germany, right by the Kitzbühler Ache river.

Kössen is nestled in a wide valley, surrounded by beautiful mountains. To the north, you'll see the Chiemgauer Alps. To the south, the impressive Kaiser Mountains rise up.
This village is also where three rivers meet: the Großache river, the Kohlenbach, and the Weißenbach. This makes the area very green and scenic.

Air Sports Adventures
The mountains around Kössen create perfect conditions for air sports. The warm air currents, called thermals, are great for hang gliding and paragliding. Imagine soaring high above the valley like a bird!
The valley floor is wide and flat, mostly covered in meadows. This makes it a safe place to land after your flight. Even better, the ski lifts used in winter can take you up the mountains in summer too. This makes it easy for air sports fans to reach the launch spots.
Hang Gliding History
Kössen has a special place in hang gliding history. It was the very first location for the World Championships in 1976. The European Championships also started here in 1977.
These big competitions soon began happening every other year. A new place is chosen each time, but Kössen is so popular that it's the only place that has hosted both championships more than once. It hosted the European Championships again in 1980 and the World Championships again in 1985. Paragliding is also very popular on the Unterberg mountain.
