Walchsee is a beautiful town, also called a municipality, in the Austrian state of Tyrol. It is located in the Kufstein district. The town is found in the lower Inn valley and is part of a lovely area known as "Kaiserwinkl" and "Untere Schranne."

Exploring Walchsee's Location

Walchsee is about 18 kilometers (11 miles) northeast of the city of Kufstein. It sits between a lake with the same name and the base of the amazing Kaiser mountain range.

Natural Wonders of Walchsee

Walchsee is home to north Tyrol's largest preserved raised bog, which is a special type of wetland. It is called the "Schwemm." The lake Walchsee covers about 2.5 square kilometers (1 square mile). In summer, its average temperature is a warm 21°C (70°F).

Walchsee's Borders and Neighbors

Walchsee shares its borders with several other towns. It borders two municipalities in the Kufstein district: Ebbs and Rettenschöss. It also borders three municipalities in the Kitzbühel district: Kössen, Schwendt, and Kirchdorf in Tirol.

Walchsee even has a border with a German town called Aschau im Chiemgau. This German town is part of the Rosenheim district. The lowest point in Walchsee is in Durchholzen, at 650 meters (2,133 feet). The highest point is the Vordere Kesselschneid mountain, which reaches 2,002 meters (6,568 feet) high.

Walchsee is made up of 5 smaller areas or "districts." These are Durchholzen, Schwaigs, Oed, Winkl, and Walchsee itself.

A Look into Walchsee's Past

The town of Walchsee was first mentioned a very long time ago, in a document from Pope Eugene III. This document was written in 1151. It listed the properties belonging to the Rott Abbey, which was near Rosenheim. In this list, the village of Walshe (which is Walchsee) was mentioned.

Winter Activities

In winter, you can explore 40 kilometers (25 miles) of walking paths. There are also 25 kilometers (16 miles) of ski runs for skiing. If you like cross-country skiing, Walchsee has 140 kilometers (87 miles) of tracks. You can also go sledding or ice skating!
