History of Kirchdorf
Kirchdorf gets its name from its church. This church is the oldest one in the entire district. Long ago, around the late 100s or early 200s AD, a Roman villa stood where the church is now. This villa was later destroyed during a time of big changes and movements of people called the Migration Period.
By the 700s, the first church in Kirchdorf was built. It was placed right on top of the old Roman villa's foundations. The name "Chirichdorf" was first officially written down between 1107 and 1121. It appeared in a book from the Tegernsee Abbey.
Until 1805, the church in Kirchdorf was also in charge of the area of Reit im Winkl. This created strong connections between the two communities. However, this link ended when Reit im Winkl started its own church parish.
