Getting Around the Mountains: Lifts and Gondolas
The hills south of Ellmau have many lifts. These help people get up the mountains easily. A brand new gondola lift now takes visitors up the Hartkaiser mountain. This gondola replaced an older funicular lift.
Winter and Summer Lifts
In winter, several drag lifts help skiers on the lower slopes. There are also smaller lifts for beginners. The main lifts are open in both summer and winter.
- Astberg Chair Lift: About 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) east of the village is the Astberg. A 4-person chair lift goes to the top. There you can find a cafe.
- Hartkaiser Gondola: About 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) west of Ellmau is the heated Hartkaiser gondola. It takes about 7 minutes to reach the top. At the top, there is a restaurant and a fun park. This park has interactive exhibits and cool wood carvings. The old funicular car is now a monument there.
- Brandstadl Gondola Lifts: About 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) west, near Scheffau, are the Brandstadl Gondola Lifts. These are 4-person and 8-person cars that hang from a cable.
- Hohe Salve Lift: About 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) away is the Hohe Salve lift. This is also a gondola lift. You can ride it down the other side of the Hohe Salve to Hopfgarten.
You can buy single tickets for these lifts at the stations. You can also get weekly, fortnightly, or season passes from tourist information centers. These passes usually cover most lifts in the SkiWelt area. There are no lifts going up the Wilder Kaiser side from Ellmau. However, you can take a taxi to Wochenbrunn and then walk further up.
