Exploring Going's Location
Going is nestled in a beautiful valley. It sits west of St. Johann in Tirol, between the Kitzbühel Alps to the south and the impressive Wild Kaiser mountains to the north. This area is known as the Sölllandl.
Going is made up of several smaller parts, or hamlets. These include Schwendt, Aschau, Prama, Sonnseite, and Schattseite.
Going shares its borders with a few other nearby towns:
Going's Past: A Look Back
Going was first mentioned in official records way back in 1160. It was called Gouwingen in a document from Baumbach Abbey. In 2010, the town celebrated its 850th anniversary of this first mention! The name "Going" likely comes from an old Bavarian nobleman named Guowo or Gauwo. This suggests that Bavarian people might have founded the village. However, newer studies show that these early mentions might have been about a different place called Gauing in Upper Bavaria.
The Village Church
Going has a very beautiful church. It is one of the most impressive Rococo churches in Tyrol. Rococo is a fancy style of art and architecture from the 1700s, known for its detailed decorations. This church is dedicated to the Holy Cross and a saint named Laurentius.
The church was designed by Andrä Hueber. The amazing paintings on the walls and ceilings, called frescoes, were done by Matthias Kirchner. Both artists were from Kitzbühel. The altars and holy statues inside the church were carved by Thomas Blieml, a sculptor from Going. You can also see an interesting statue of the Madonna (Mary) in the left-hand altar, which was carved around 1480.
Mining History
Between Going and Oberndorf, in an area called Rehrobichl, people used to mine for copper and silver. This mining happened in the early 1500s. The miners, called Bergknappen, lived in the hamlet of Prama.
The name Prama is actually from the Celtic language. It means "the place where blackberries grow." This is a clue that Celtic people lived here around 800 B.C. and also mined copper and silver in this region a very long time ago. The mine was eventually closed around 1773.
When the mine was at its busiest, about 12,000 kilograms (26,455 pounds) of copper and 7,000 kilograms (15,432 pounds) of silver were dug out each year. The place where the metals were melted down was in the hamlet of Bärenstätten, near St. Johann. The deepest part of the mine went down about 880 meters (2,887 feet)!
