Brixen im Thale is also the birthplace of Matthäus Hetzenauer, a famous Austrian soldier.

Exploring Brixen im Thale's Location

Where is Brixen im Thale?

Brixen im Thale is in the Kitzbühel District. It's about 10 kilometers west of the town of Kitzbühel. The town is at the very start of the Brixental valley. It sits 794 meters above sea level. The area is surrounded by the green, grassy mountains of the Kitzbühel Alps.

The tallest mountain in the town's area is the Fleiding. It reaches 1,892 meters high. To the north of the town, you'll see the Hohe Salve mountain ridge. South of the town are the Nachtsöllberg and the Gaisberg mountains. The Brixenbach valley separates these two mountains.

Sunny and Shady Mountain Sides

The slopes north of Brixen im Thale are called Sonnberg or Sonseitn. This means "sunny side." These slopes are mostly used for farming. They have only a few conifer trees. The slopes south of the town are known as Schattseitn, or "shadow side." These areas are covered in spruce forests. You can also find some alpine meadows there.

Parts of Brixen im Thale

Brixen im Thale is made up of several smaller villages and areas. These include Achenberg, Brixen-Zentrum (the center), Buchberg, Buchschwent, Feuring, Griesberg, Hof, Lauterbach, Maria-Luisenbad, Ritschberg, Salvenberg, Schön, Sonnberg, Vordermoosen, and Winkl.

How the Village Has Grown

New village square

The village square in front of the community hall got a big makeover. This happened between 2009 and 2010. The old cobblestones were replaced. The square was made bigger and raised higher. The fountain was moved to a new spot. It's now next to a large beech tree.

Red and white bricks were used for the new ground. New seating areas were built. You can find them around the fountain and at the bus stop. The main road through the village center was also updated. This was done to help slow down traffic.

Since a new ring road was built, life in the village has become much better. In recent years, many new homes have been built. These are especially for local people. The town encourages new residents and helps the local economy grow. More land for building will be available in the future. This will help the main village center become even more important.

A Look Back at Brixen im Thale's Past

Brixen im Thale has a very long and interesting history. The Celts were the first people to live in this valley. They built small villages here. We know this from old axes and swords found in the area. An ancient burial ground with urns was also discovered.

The name Brixen im Thale might even come from the Celtic language. This suggests that people have always lived here. Around 300 A.D., the Romans built a type of temple. It was on the same spot where the church stands today.

In 788 A.D., the church was mentioned by Bishop Arno. It was called "Indiculus Arnonis," meaning "a church with its own fields." At that time, it was the only church in the Brixental. This makes it one of the oldest churches in the Tyrolean Unterland region. Other old churches are in St. Johann in Tirol, Ebbs, Söll, Radfeld, and St. Ulrich am Pillersee.

In 1481, a library was started in Brixen im Thale. It was called the Taz Library. Wilhelm Taz, a teacher and priest, founded it. This library is still around today!

Around the year 1600, people mined copper in the area. However, copper mining stopped by the end of the 1700s.

The Antlassritt Tradition

The traditional Antlassritt takes place every year on Corpus Christi. This is a special procession. Farmers from the towns of Kirchberg in Tirol, Brixen im Thale, and Westendorf (Tirol) take part. They ride on horseback.

The Antlassritt remembers an important event from a very old war. Long ago, in the 1600s, the villagers from these communities faced a challenge near the Klausenbach river. The farmers' ride to the Klausenkapelle chapel in Kirchberg in Tirol celebrates their success.
