The Kaaterskill Creek is a cool stream in New York State. It flows for about 25.9 miles (41.7 kilometers). This creek is a branch of the Catskill Creek.

It runs through Greene and Ulster counties. Eventually, its water joins the Hudson River.

Where Kaaterskill Creek Starts

Kaaterskill Creek begins its journey in the town of Hunter. This area is part of the beautiful Catskill Forest Preserve. You can find its starting point northwest of the village of Tannersville.

The Creek's Journey

The creek first flows south towards a small place called Haines Falls. Here, it makes a sharp turn to the east. It then drops quickly into a deep valley known as Kaaterskill Clove.

Kaaterskill Clove and Falls

As the creek flows through Kaaterskill Clove, it runs next to New York Route 23A. Another stream, Spruce Creek, joins it from the north. Spruce Creek is famous for creating the amazing Kaaterskill Falls. These falls are a popular spot to visit.

Exiting the Mountains

Kaaterskill Creek leaves the mountains at the hamlet of Palenville. From there, it takes a winding path. It crosses back and forth between Greene and Ulster counties.

Final Stretch to Catskill Creek

Finally, the creek turns northeast. It flows until it reaches its end at Catskill Creek. This meeting point is near Cauterskill, New York, just west of the village of Catskill.
