Kai Niambi Scott, born in 1970, is an American lawyer. She is currently a federal judge in Pennsylvania. She works for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Before this, she was a judge for the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas from 2015 to 2023.
Her Education Journey
Kai Scott studied at Hampton University. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree there in 1991. Later, she went to West Virginia University College of Law. In 1995, she earned her Juris Doctor degree, which is a law degree.
Her Legal Career
Kai Scott has had a long career in law. From 1996 to 1998, she worked as a law clerk. She helped with cases about workers' compensation in Pennsylvania.
From 1998 to 2004, she was a trial attorney for the Defender Association of Philadelphia. She worked to defend people in court.
Later, from 2004 to 2010, she became an assistant federal public defender. This means she helped people who could not afford a lawyer in federal cases.
From 2010 to 2015, she led the trial unit for the Federal Community Defender Office. This office helps people in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
In 2015, Kai Scott was elected to be a judge. She served on the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas.
Becoming a Federal Judge
On July 12, 2022, President Joe Biden chose Kai Scott for a new role. He nominated her to become a United States district judge. This is a very important position.
She was nominated to fill a seat left by Judge C. Darnell Jones II. Her nomination was reviewed by the Senate Judiciary Committee. A hearing was held on September 7, 2022.
On September 28, 2022, the committee voted to approve her nomination. Then, on December 7, 2022, the United States Senate voted to confirm her. She officially became a judge on January 18, 2023.
