About Kaia Kater
Early Life and Musical Start
Kaia Kater was born in Montreal, Quebec. She spent her early childhood in a neighborhood called Mile End. When she was 12 years old, she started playing the banjo.
She also lived in other places like Wakefield, Ottawa, and Winnipeg. Later, she went to Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia, in the United States. She received a scholarship to study banjo there. While in West Virginia, she also learned to flatfoot, which is a type of rhythmic dance. She also learned more about body percussion, like hambone.
Family Background
Kaia's mother is from Quebec, Canada. Her father moved to Canada from Grenada when he was a teenager in 1986. He came as part of a special program for young speakers. This was after a big event in Grenada involving the United States.
Kaia grew up surrounded by North American folk music. She often went to music festivals, camps, and conferences during her teenage years. This helped her learn a lot about folk music.
Kaia Kater's Music Career
First Recordings and Albums
When Kaia was 17, she recorded her first collection of songs, called an EP. It was titled "Rappin' Shady Grove." She said that the famous musician Drake and his storytelling in songs inspired her.
In 2012, she released her first official EP, Old Soul. Two years later, in 2014, she released her first full-length album, Sorrow Bound.
Award-Winning Music
In 2016, Kaia Kater won an award called "Pushing the Boundaries" at the 12th Canadian Folk Music Awards. This was for her third album, Nine Pin. Important music magazines and newspapers praised this album. The Guardian called it "tremendous" and gave it four out of five stars.
Rolling Stone magazine also noticed Kaia's music. They highlighted how she mixed traditional banjo playing with honest lyrics. Her songs often talked about important topics like poverty and racism. Rolling Stone described her music as "a quiet, yet powerful storm." They even named her a "need to know" artist in 2016. NPR, a well-known radio network, featured her song "St. Elizabeth." They said it had a wise, rustic feel. Kaia recorded the entire Nine Pin album in just one day in Toronto.
Touring and Inspirations
In 2017 and 2018, Kaia Kater traveled a lot to perform. She played at many venues and festivals in the United States, Canada, Europe, and the United Kingdom. One special performance was at the Kennedy Center. She was invited by the Grammy Museum to be part of a tribute to the legendary folk musician Pete Seeger.
She also performed at the 2018 Newport Folk Festival. Rolling Stone magazine again highlighted her performance as one of the '12 Best Things We Saw' at the festival. Carnegie Hall, a very famous music venue, announced her performance as part of their Migrations: The Making of America series in 2018-2019.
Grenades Album
Kaia Kater's 2018 album, Grenades, explores her own family history. It tells the story of her father's childhood and his journey to Canada. To find inspiration for this album, Kaia traveled to Grenada, her father's home country. This was her first trip there as an adult.
While folk music has a big influence on her, Kaia also looks up to other artists. She mentions Nina Simone, Erykah Badu, and Lauryn Hill as important voices. These artists have helped shape her artistic, social, and political expression.
Her most recent album, Strange Medicine, was released in 2024. It was considered for the 2025 Polaris Music Prize, a major music award in Canada.
