This town sits in the beautiful Sindhuli Valley. A very old and important place, the Sindhuli Gadhi fort, is on top of a hill in the Mahabharata mountain range nearby. History of Kamalamai

Long ago, around 1756, trade between the valley and Tibet stopped. This happened when the Kuti Pass was taken over. Later, King Prithvi Narayan Shah entered the valley after winning a battle in Kirtipur.

King Jaya Prakash Malla of Kathmandu asked the British for help. So, the East India Company sent soldiers led by Captain Kinloch in 1767. However, King Prithvi Narayan Shah's army defeated the British force at Sindhuli. This was a very important moment. It was the first time a British army was defeated in Asia!

The British soldiers were surprised by the local geography. They had modern weapons like guns and cannons. But the Gorkha army was very brave. They also knew the land much better. The place where the British army lost is now famous. It is called "Sindhuli Gadhi" and is a big part of Nepal's history.

An older road that links to Dharan is also being reopened. This will make it easier to travel through the Inner Tarai Valleys of Sindhuli and Udayapur to Eastern Nepal. Long-distance buses run from the main town. You can catch buses to cities like Kathmandu, Janakpur, Biratnagar, and Pokhara.
