Kangar is the capital city and largest town in Perlis, Malaysia. It is also known as Kangaq in Northern Malay and كڠار in Jawi. Kangar has about 48,898 people and covers an area of 2,619.4 hectares. It is located very close to the Thailand border, at the northernmost tip of Peninsular Malaysia. The town sits right beside the Perlis River.
Kangar is an important center for growing and processing rice in the area. Its local government also manages the nearby communities of Arau and Kaki Bukit. The main part of Kangar is called Sena Province. Kangar is the smallest state capital in Malaysia. Many of its residents work as farmers or for the government. The town's industries include making cement, processing wood, rubber, and paper, and preparing sugar and prawns.
Kangar's Past
Kangar has been around for about 350 years! Its history began in 1653 when a place called Kota Sena was built. This was the main administrative center for Sultan Muhyiddin Mansor Shah, the 14th ruler of the Kedah Sultanate. Back then, Kangar was a busy "land port" or pengkalan. This means it was a place where boats and large cargo ships called tongkangs would dock. They anchored at the spot where the Perlis River, which flows through Kangar, meets the sea at Kuala Perlis.
The name Kangar comes from a type of tree. Traders used to do business under a big, shady tree at the port. This tree was called Pohon Kangar. It became a famous spot for many business deals. Because of this, everyone who visited the port started calling it the Pohon Kangar Port, honoring the tree that gave them shade and a place to trade.
