Karl von Eckartshausen (born June 28, 1752 – died May 12, 1803) was a German writer and thinker. He was interested in mysticism, which is about understanding spiritual truths through special experiences. He wrote books about these ideas.

Early Life and Education

Karl von Eckartshausen was born in Haimhausen, a town in Bavaria, Germany. When he was young, he went to universities in Munich and Ingolstadt. There, he studied philosophy, which is the study of knowledge and existence. He also studied civil law, which are the rules that govern people's lives.

His Famous Book

One of Karl von Eckartshausen's most famous books is called The Cloud upon the Sanctuary. This book is about Christian mysticism. It explores spiritual ideas and hidden meanings within Christianity.

Later, people interested in occultism (the study of secret knowledge and magic) became very interested in his book. An English translator named Isabelle de Steiger translated it into English.

Influence on Secret Societies

The Cloud upon the Sanctuary became very important to a group called the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. This was a secret society that studied magic and spiritual ideas. A famous member, Arthur Edward Waite, thought the book was very special.

The book also caught the attention of Aleister Crowley, another well-known English writer. Crowley was the founder of a spiritual movement called Thelema. Eckartshausen's book helped lead Crowley to join the Golden Dawn.

Joining and Leaving the Illuminati

Karl von Eckartshausen also joined a group called the Illuminati. This group was founded by Adam Weishaupt. The Illuminati believed that people could gain knowledge only through human reason and logic.

However, Eckartshausen soon left the Illuminati. He realized that the group's ideas were different from his own. He believed that true understanding came from spiritual insight, not just human logic.

Experiments with Light

Eckartshausen was friends with Johann Georg Schröpfer. Schröpfer was one of the first people to create phantasmagoria. This was a popular show that used magic lanterns to project scary images and make "ghosts" appear.

Eckartshausen himself experimented with magic lanterns. He used them to create his own "ghost projections." He would show these projections to small groups of four or five people.

Later Life

Karl von Eckartshausen lived to be 50 years old. He passed away in Munich, the same city where he had studied earlier in his life.
