Early Life and Education
Karla Souza was born in Mexico City, Mexico. Her birthday is December 11, 1985. Her father was from Chile and her mother, Mónica, was from Mexico. Karla lived in Aspen, Colorado until she was eight years old. Her grandmother moved from Chile to New York City in the 1960s. She worked for the Rockefeller family for 20 years. Because of her grandmother's move, Karla has an American passport.
Karla studied acting at a school called Centro de Educación Artística in Mexico City. This school is run by Televisa. She also went to acting school in France. While there, she joined a professional theater group that traveled all over the country. Karla was even chosen for a French reality TV show called Star Academy. However, she decided to study at London's Central School of Speech and Drama instead.
She finished her studies in London in 2008. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in acting. Near the end of her time in London, she received a special award. This award is given to the most promising actress in London. After her studies, she returned to Mexico City. She started acting in TV and movies when she was 22 years old.
Acting Career
Karla Souza started her TV career in 2009. She appeared in a Mexican TV show called Verano de amor. Later, she starred in Mexican comedy shows like Los Héroes del Norte and La Clínica.
Movie Roles
Karla has been in several movies. One of her early film roles was in From Prada to Nada. In 2013, she was in two very popular Mexican movies. These were Nosotros los Nobles and Instructions Not Included. Both movies were big hits at the box office.
Moving to Hollywood
In 2014, Karla moved to Los Angeles. She wanted to act in English-language movies and TV shows. She soon got a main role in the legal drama series How to Get Away with Murder. In this show, she played a law student named Laurel Castillo. She acted alongside the famous actress Viola Davis. In February 2015, Karla was featured on the cover of Women's Health magazine.
Since 2021, Karla has played the character Marina in the TV comedy Home Economics.
Personal Life
Karla Souza got engaged to Marshall Trenkmann in December 2013. They got married in May 2014. They have three children together. Their daughter Gianna was born in April 2018. Their son Luka was born in June 2020. Their youngest daughter, Giulia, was born in March 2024.
Karla can speak three languages very well. She is fluent in Spanish, English, and French.
In 2015, Karla gave a TEDx talk in León, Guanajuato. The talk was called "Sweet are the Fruits of Adversity." It became a very popular TEDx talk in Spanish, with millions of views.
