How Karlshamn Municipality Was Formed
In 1863, when Sweden first created its local government laws, the area that is now Karlshamn Municipality was split into the City of Karlshamn and five smaller rural areas. Later, in 1881, one of these areas, Asarum, was further divided into Ringamåla.
A big change happened in 1952. The number of smaller municipalities around Karlshamn was reduced. For example, Hällaryd joined with Åryd, and Asarum reunited with Ringamåla. Also, Mörrum joined with Elleholm.
Finally, on January 1, 1967, the city of Karlshamn joined with Asarum, Hällaryd, and Mörrum. This created the single, larger Karlshamn Municipality we know today. This was part of a bigger plan to make all local government units in Sweden into one type of municipality.
