Tingsryd Municipality (called Tingsryds kommun in Swedish) is a local area in southern Sweden. It is located in a region called Småland, within the southeastern part of Kronoberg County. The main town and administrative center of this municipality is Tingsryd.
The municipality we know today was created in 1971. This happened when the market town of Tingsryd, which started in 1921, joined together with the areas around it.
Tingsryd is well-known for its ice hockey team, Tingsryds AIF. Many players from this club have gone on to play in the NHL, which is a major hockey league. The team currently plays in Hockeyallsvenskan, a top Swedish league.
Tingsryd Municipality also calls itself the "Horse Capital." This is because it has a strong connection to horses, with nearly 2,000 horses living there. The Tingsryd horse racing track, which opened in 2003, is special. It is the only one in Northern Europe that is a mile (1,609 meters) long. It hosts all sorts of horse riding sports.
Geography of Tingsryd
Tingsryd Municipality is in an area known for its traditional forests in Mid-Sweden. There are also some farming areas. The landscape is dotted with many small lakes. A large part of the people living in the municipality, about 38%, still live in the countryside. The rest live in smaller towns that are similar in size. There isn't one very large city in the middle of the municipality.
About 11 kilometers southwest of Tingsryd, you can find the Mien crater. This crater was formed about 120 million years ago when a meteorite hit the Earth. Because the area is not very crowded, it is seen as a peaceful place away from the busy city life.
