Early Life and Discovery
Karolína Kurková was born in Děčín, a town in what was then Czechoslovakia. Her father, Josef Kurka, was a Czech basketball player, and her mother was from Slovakia. When she was young, other kids sometimes made fun of her for being tall.
Everything changed when a friend sent photos of Kurková to a modeling agency in Prague. At just 15 years old, she was chosen to walk in a fashion show. Soon, she was also modeling for commercials and in magazines. To get more experience, she traveled to Milan, Italy, and signed a contract with the famous fashion designer Miuccia Prada.
When she was 17, Kurková moved to New York City. In February 2001, she appeared on the cover of the American edition of Vogue, which was a huge step in her career.
Career
A Star in the Modeling World
After her first Vogue cover, Kurková became a star at high-fashion shows. The famous lingerie brand Victoria's Secret chose her for their 2000 fashion show, even though she was only 16. She also worked with major fashion brands like Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Christian Dior.
In the 2002 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, she wore the "Star of Victoria" Fantasy Bra, a special bra decorated with jewels. She has walked the runway for many top designers, including Prada, Gucci, and Versace.
Kurková has had some memorable moments on the runway. During a Versace show in 2002, she tripped on her long dress but handled it like a pro. That same year, she was named "Model of the Year" at the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards because of her hard work.
She has been on the cover of more than 50 international Vogue magazines. She also appeared in other magazines like Elle and Vanity Fair.
Working with Victoria's Secret
In 2005, Kurková officially became a Victoria's Secret Angel. In the 2006 fashion show, she wore the "Hearts On Fire" Fantasy Bra, which was worth $6.5 million and covered in almost 2,000 diamonds.
During that same show, one of her shoes came off while she was walking down the runway. She kept walking with only one shoe on, and many people admired her for staying so calm. In 2007, she and the other Angels received a star on the Hollywood "Walk of Fame."
Kurková has a smooth belly button because of a surgery she had as a baby. In photos, her belly button is often edited to look more typical.
Acting and Television
Kurková has also tried acting. In 2009, she played the character Cover Girl in the action movie G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. She has also been a guest judge on TV shows like America's Next Top Model and Germany's Next Top Model.
She has made guest appearances on TV series like Chuck and 30 Rock. She was also a coach on the modeling competition show The Face, alongside other supermodels like Naomi Campbell and Heidi Klum.
Business Projects
Kurková co-founded a company called Gryph and IvyRose. The company works with doctors to create herbal care products for children. She also released her own perfume in 2013.
Personal Life

Kurková is married to Archie Drury, and they have three children: two sons, Tobin and Noah, and a daughter, Luna Grace. The family lives in Miami, Florida, and Kurková is also an American citizen.
In 2009, it was reported that Kurková had a health condition called hypothyroidism. This condition can affect a person's weight and energy levels. She spoke about her experience, saying:
I thought I was going crazy. I was having panic attacks every minute and I didn't know what was happening, because I've been a healthy person. I've exercised all my life. I've always eaten well and taken care of myself.
She explained that the condition caused her to gain weight, but she was able to manage her health with treatment.
Charity Work and Awards
Kurková is known for her work with charities that help children. In 2006, she received an award for her humanitarian work from an organization called "Women Together."
She has received many awards for her modeling career. In 2004, People magazine named her one of the "50 Most Beautiful People." She is also the youngest model ever to win "Model of the Year" at the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards. In 2012, she was honored as a "Style Icon" at the Vienna Awards for Fashion and Lifestyle.
