Kars Province facts for kids
Kars is a province in the northeastern part of Turkey. It shares a border with the country of Armenia.
From 1878 to 1917, much of what is now Kars province was part of the Russian Kars oblast (a type of region or province).
In 1919 and 1920, the area was controlled by the Democratic Republic of Armenia. It was called the Vanand province, and the city of Kars was its capital. Later, this territory became part of Turkey through the Treaty of Kars with the Soviet Union.
Districts of Kars Province
Kars province is divided into 8 main areas called districts (ilçe in Turkish). Each district is named after its main town:
- Akyaka
- Arpaçay
- Digor
- Kağızman
- Kars
- Sarıkamış
- Selim
- Susuz
There are also 383 villages located within Kars province.
